guestpost // cheer up >>>>

Hey, it's Joanna from ModaMama here.  I always find the intro paragraph and spiel of guests posts to be really awkward and difficult.   It's like a bad dating video, "I'm Joanna and I like dresses, fashion, photography, long walks on the beach...blah, blah, blah."  So let's skip that shall we?  If you want to know a bit about me, hop on over to the site and we'll chat!

So what am I here to say?  I'm here to say, "Cheer up! You're going to die!"  Let me explain.

We all stress a lot about a lot of things:  Fashion, blogging, sponsorship, posting, our car, this wrinkle, that wart, etc. etc.   And the fact is that a lot of the things we stress about don't matter at all.  In 80 years or so we'll be dead and 80 years after that chances are no one will remember our names.

Don't believe me?  How many know what your great great great grandmother on your Father's side name was?  What about her hopes, dreams, passion, etc etc?  See it doesn't matter 'cause our time here is really small and finite.

So on the flip side, smile because it doesn't matter!  There's no need to stress about your sponsorship, your blog layout, your not cool enough car, 'cause it really doesn't matter.  The person with the Jag and the person with the twenty year old Volvo are both in the same boat.  Yup, they'll both be dead.

So really all that matters is today, and what you decide is worth your time.

Now since I'm a fashion blogger I'm going to bring that back on point now.  It means that though I love fashion, it doesn't matter.  My daughter, my love, my passion matters, and so it gives me endless freedom to play with my look.  It means I can wear leopard, spots, florals - whatever I choose!  And the worst thing that will happen is that it'll look bad.  For one day.  Out of the lifespan of the entire universe.

thanks for a fantastic post joanna!!!

heartshaped stones

heart shaped stone and forgotten about boots

i've been feeling such a renewal beginning this week. the past few weeks have been tough personally, but i feel that that is finally passing, i feel i've learnt and grown so much in the past month. the last few days i've felt such a feeling of contentment. of joy and gratefulness for the amazing life that i am blessed with. for three beautiful daughters. a man who loves me. for the lovely friends i have {online and irl}. for this space. for a growing business. for the freedom to live life my way.

sometimes it takes a rough patch to make you appreciate all that you have. i'm feeling the urge to pick up a brush and paint. in truth, it's been a long time since i've painted. since i've felt inspired. i painted the background of a canvas last night. i'm hoping for some more painting time later. i gave a huge soulsigh to be back at this place of happiness.

the sun is shining here today, my garden is covered in a multicoloured patchwork blanket of autumn leaves. -the girls are all busy reading or crafting right now, we heading out in a bit to visit the old-fashioned sweet shop, and then having an indian takeaway as a treat this evening. fingers crossed it's dry tomorrow, and we're planning a hike - i can feel the river and the woods calling me.

peace

polly xo

happiness is....

'happiness is...' -  each week we'll meet two lovely ladies to find out what happiness is to them.... if you'd like to take part please drop me an email :)

what makes you happiest?
waking up after sleeping in, eating a delicious breakfast with my mister, cuddling on the couch with our two fat bulldogs and watching endless episodes of tv on netflix. kind of my idea of a perfect day!

do you have a ‘happy place’?
any and everywhere with my two pups. going to the dog park is the highlight of most of our days.

do you have a favourite happy song?
while i risk getting the sideye for this one, i love party in the usa by miley cyrus, or any song by britney spears. something about them just gets my blood pumping.

what gets you past a bad day?
a bubble bath! or cleaning. i tend to zone out in a beyond-scorching tub or scrub the house top to bottom when i'm feeling less than stellar. they couldn't be more opposite but they both work!

what makes you happiest?
I am happiest in my self when I am being creative. I did a pottery course last year, and although I wasn't very good at it, I felt so happy to be using my brain in a non-academic way and felt so proud to actually produce items that I now use around the house.

I also really like seeking out pictures and putting them together for my blog, I started it as an escapism whilst I was at university, and never thought anyone would actually read it, so it makes me happy that there are other people out there that aren't happy living in an Ikea show room. I have got some really good feedback and made some really lovely like minded blog friends from all over the world.

do you have a ‘happy place’?
Every couple of months I go to my parents house in Snowdonia national park. They live up a hill, 15 miles from the nearest town, and don't have actual next door neighbours, it is so nice to be away from the pressures of city life - and seeing my parents . I always come away feeling refreshed and motivated, but sad I moved so far away from my mum and dad.

do you have a favourite happy song?
I am a really emotional person and music has real power over me, it has the ability to bring me down, perk me up or scare the crap out of me (the jaws theme). 10 years ago I was doing an Art degree and listening to a lot of Nick Drake and found myself getting really depressed so now sadly I can't listen to him without feeling anxious and sorry for myself.

Although music has the power to make me low, If I am feeling miserable Toots and The Maytals or Jimi Hendrix will perk me up. I had a job interview recently and I listened to Toots and the Maytals for the whole journey and lost all anxiety and just felt really positive and care free. Although I am sure it wasn't all down to the music I got the job.

what gets you past a bad day?
I adore being a nurse but with the amazing moments comes really, really rough ones. After a particularly bad shift there is only one thing that will suffice, to tuck myself into bed with a teapot of tea, have a bit of a self indulgent sob, and then settle down with a good book, candles and my ipod - Bliss!

what do you choose?

it's a lesson that took me a long time to learn. as colette said,  "be happy. it's one way of being wise." some of us may be born smiling, others of us have to work at it. choose it. every. single. day.

caught in a spiral of depression, it's easy to lose sight of happiness. you get stuck in your mind and caught in your own issues. you feel bad, so you think bad thoughts, which in turn make you feel worse. the thought of choosing to be happy at such a time can seem cuh-razy! thoughts become feelings and choosing happy thoughts is an option.

the media tells us that we need things to be happy, that we have to have this or that, or go here or there, else we couldn't possibly be happy. we need to look like this, or own the latest gadget to be content. but in truth that is all rubbish. start today, make a decision to be happy. to be grateful for all that you have. to appreciate every single moment.

i've worked my way back up from rock bottom {more than once} and i make a conscious decision every day to choose happiness. there are times when it's harder than others but it is always an option. i choose to focus on the good in my life instead of the bad. to be grateful for all that i have instead of yearning for what i don't.

* make a list of wonderful things about your life. add to it every day.
* every morning when you wake up tell yourself you are happy
* give thanks for every day
* smile
* focus on the good things

it might be difficult to begin with.... but i promise you that it's worth it. have you chosen happiness??

happiness is....

'happiness is...' -  each week we'll meet two lovely ladies to find out what happiness is to them.... if you'd like to take part please drop me an email :)

www.cloudydreams.com & www.trudyflorence.com
 what makes you happiest?
So many things! What actually comes to mine first is riding my bike. Since moving to Holland I've fallen in love with being able to get anywhere in the city on my bike safely. This is so different to Brisbane, Australia where I was living before. My bike was stolen last week so that made me very unhappy but now I get to shop for a brand new one which is also lots of fun!

do you have a ‘happy place’?
Having just done a great big backpacking trip with my boy the happy places that spring to mind are some of my favourite travel destinations - Paris & San Sebastian, Spain are some of my favourite places in the world!

do you have a favourite happy song?
I have to admit that I'm a little addicted to You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates and listening to Clap Your Hands by Sia always makes me smile!

what gets you past a bad day?
Generally my boy will do something that cheers me up. He's such a joyful big kid and his silliness and love of life is so infectious it's hard to stay grumpy when he tries his hardest to cheer me up!

blog

what makes you happiest?
Lovely encounters with lovely people. Finding amazing new artists/bloggers. Getting something nice in the mail. Delicious teas, pretty stationary and a good owl:)

do you have a ‘happy place’?
I'm a bit of a homebody, other than that I've found the most magical place that reminds me of a Japanese train station. It's the best place to read in the summer!

do you have a favourite happy song?
Ooh, so many, I could easily make a gigabyte mixtape. Can I pick three?
Quelque Part by Felipecha. New Shoes by Paolo Nutini. Also, the Owl City song for the Ga'Hoole movie!
what gets you past a bad day?
Getting out of the house to do something fun, putting some nice music on or watching a happy/funny movie.

Living LIfe Your Way....Interview with Mon

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

*Hi Mon , tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a listener with a big heart and blunt tongue. After living in Uruguay, Australia, and England, I'm currently in Montenegro, up a mountain, by the sea, with a hubby and toddler. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

*Aside from your blogs, what else keeps you busy?

Mostly my spirited 2.5 yr-old girl. I'm an Intuitive Mentor, a spiritual life coach of sorts. But that's not a paid gig (yet). I also, take photographs, create mixed media art, crochet, I help bloggers with web/blog design, cook, do yoga, am writing a book, and read, and read, and read. Yet I have strived for simplicity in the last two years, so I aim for not being busy. I spread all the above out thinly. I'm an ideas person, so it takes work to choose focus or a nap instead of something else to do.

*Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?

No. I once dreamt of being an actress, an educational psychologist, a professional photographer, a natural health therapist (and others!). Many choices were down to trying to push my life into what others thought it should be. Yet when I have allowed myself to be fully me, I have always been about the process. It didn't worry me to 'become something'. To be respectable with a 'proper' career. I love tasting life. When I've been at peace with myself, I have never dreamt too far ahead.

*When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

The belief that this is my one life. Even if you believe in reincarnation, this is still one specific life. I believe it's
precious. I believe it's amazing. I consider myself an optimistic realist. I don't view life with rose-tinted glasses, and I do have a cynical streak. Yet I always trust that something good is around the corner. But we have to be open to receive it. So when I've been at my lowest, I allow the dark emotions, and then work my way out, to be ready. I also view difficulties as opportunities for growth as a person.

*Fear affects most of us at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?

I'm quite audacious. You can't live life fully if you're timid. Yet I've spent most of life owning the fear of trying to be perfect. I feared for many years not being good enough to be an artist, or writer, or mentor. I used to think if I couldn't do it perfectly, there was no point. And when you think like that, you're consumed in Fear, even if you can't see it. Instead of doing what you love, you put it off. Crazy. It took me a loooong time to work out two simple facts. The doing is everything. And, a satisfying result is not the same thing as a perfect result.

*What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

I'm terrible at this sort of advice. Actually, I wrote a post recently, just do it. Synchronicity!

*What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

This list might change....

An acceptance of and work on your Shadows.
When we walk life wounded, we walk an obstacle-ridden path.
Compassion, for yourself and others. This gives us an enormous capacity for gentleness towards ourselves and empathy with others.
Gratitude for what you already have. Focusing on what you don't have and/or still want to have is living half a life.

*Where can we connect with you?

My main cyberhome is over at Holistic Mama. Doing arty things at Bohemian Shadows. Healing and creating community at Spiral Sisters.

Living Life Your Way....Interview with Pixie Campbell

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Pixie Campbell

*Hi Pixie, tell us a  little about yourself.

I'm a mama, as well as an artist and writer. I love unlearning about art and life, keeping my creative pot stirring, and surrounding myself with kindred souls to enhance my experience of this beautiful, sacred planet.

*Asides from your blog, what else keeps you busy?

I paint, teach my children, write, collaborate with other artists, garden and travel as much as possible

*Is the life you lead now, the life you have always dreamt of?

I didn't really ever have a prescription for a dream life. But I'm very pleased with what I have and what I'm able to do. Once I tearfully and truthfully declared that I wanted to make art all of the time, and began doing it, the rest was easy.

*When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

My children inspire me to gather my energy when I feel low on resources. I never feel I have to be perfect for them, but I do try to have energy for them. The same goes for my creative babies. I work with the animals and their teachings in my art, and so I typically run into the ones who want to help me in my personal life-in dreamtime, in nature, in my backyard. I like to study the medicine they bring by observing their habits and how they adapt. I also run about about 12 miles a week, which is just enough to keep negative energy at bay, and if I'm facing a very difficult challenge, I seek bodyworkers, and healers, as well as ask for help from connected souls. Too many years facing difficulty alone has taught me to reach out. There's always some-thing or some-force ready to aid- this I trust. I find that creating anything at all helps to shift stagnant states of being, as well.

*Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?

I consider myself rather fearless about most things, somehow I have a covenant with trust when fear rears its ugly head. However, when I was pregnant with my first child about six years ago, I was terrified that he would imprint things from my family that would cause him to suffer (as I had). It was my own fear of making mistakes. So out of this terror, I ran in all directions to seek the teachings that would eventually bring me back to trust that I am not my mother, my father, or any of their mistakes. I also accepted, rather religiously, the idea that humans get to make mistakes. Even with our children. And that not allowing mistakes and enduring shame when they do happen (which of course they will) is a recipe for depression and a very conflicted inner life. So a No Mistakes Allowed Ethic is not allowed in our home! :) It's made life so much easier on all of us.

*What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

Find many ways to open up to your own intuitive guidance. In the ways of Native Americans, we use a practice called journeywork to meet our inner council and totems which in turn help lead me to the information I need to make choices. When ego learns how to step aside, out of the inner conversation, and we learn to distill the truth from all of the messages swirling within us, we can really do no wrong. I don't believe anything happens without imparting an important teaching just for the individual, so I'd encourage your faithful readers to enjoy life as one long continuum of lessons. And, of course, risk doing what you love instead of doing what you or others think you should do!! To me, its the difference between living life awake instead of asleep due to burying the soul's desires.

*What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

I would say that's really up to the individual to discover. For me, I feel happiest and most radiant when I'm very comfortable in my own skin. Whatever it takes to be at home within, I try to do that first. I have to live with myself every day, so I may as well learn to like all of my quirky foibles and flaws, as well as my lovely bits. We are all so divine. I do wish every mama and woman could feel it in her bones. Oh, you know, one more thing: Make friends with with women much older than you! They know so much more than we and can be so nurturing when needed.

*Where can we connect with you?

A day full of fun

It's been a busy day today. Woke up to grey skies and bucket loads of rain. We had to go pick up a parcel I missed yesterday, so we wrapped up in waterproofs and splashed in the puddles on the way to the post office! It was worth it tho, because inside my parcel was this beautiful macrame owl gifted from a friend

After making hot chocolates (complete with cream and mini marshmallows) to warm us up, we got on with the crafting! Lola actually chose to do some of her 'Mathletics' programme on the internet (?!), so Kiki decided she wanted to do some weaving. I set my peg loom up for her, showed her what to do and she was away! She hardly needed any help, and is very pleased with the results -

I kept myself busy sewing the straps on a top I made yesterday, and made myself a nice new bag, modelled here by Tallulah (is it wierd to name your mannequins??)

We had such fun today, singing along to the ipod whilst the rain pounded on the windows. Bliss :)

These 3 songs were ones the girls kept asking me to put back on over and over today -

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Goddess Leonie

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Goddess Leonie

Hi Leonie, tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Why of coursicles!

Here's me in dot points:
  1. I'm totally in love with life.
  2. I see a goddess in every woman.
  3. I'm an artist, writer & goddess guide. And I help women to see what I see... the goddess inside them. Life is better when you know you are a goddess!
  4. I have an exquisite baby daughter, Ostara Faith Avalon.
  5. I am in love with a wise man who is also very hot.
  6. We live in my grandmother's old cottage in tropical paradise.

Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?

I'm very blessed to have a job that is my dream come true, and also manages to support my wee family so that my love and I can stay at home with our daughter.

I have been full time as a goddess for seven months, and was working part time as an editor before then as I grew my business. I took a few years of working part time to get my business to a point that it could really support my family happily.

Is your business as it is now something you've always dreamt of?

Heck yeah!

I love saying that my job is being a goddess!

All of us have our fears, some rule stronger than others. What part has fear played in your life?

Hmmmm. Good question.

For me, I use fear as medicine. As a teaching.

Fear is always leading me back home, to wisdom, knowing and love.

I was afraid of going full-time with my business. But it wasn't a fear that was based in practicality or logic. I knew that my business could earn enough. I was just afraid of the what-ifs: The what if I ran out of ideas? Or luck? What if, like Henny Penny, the sky fell in one day?

But I grew some cahones, and I leapt.

My love and I left the city and our public service jobs. We bought a small cottage {my grandmother's!} in tropical paradise. We did something that took our breath away. And it was perfect.

And you know what? Even if something does happen. Even if one of my fears does come true. I'll always be glad that we leapt. We will always just find the next step of what we need to do, and do it.

It's simple.

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

1. An attitude like my grandmother's. Her motto is this: "I woke up this morning, and I was still breathing, so I thought: Today is going to be a GREAT DAY!"

2. An attitude like my mother's. Her motto is this: "Everything is always going to turn out okay."

3. An attitude like mine: My motto is this: "Joy is an option."

and the bonus:

4. An attitude like my daughter's. Her motto is this: "I rock!"

When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

The 5 Rule.

How will this still affect me in 5 minutes? 5 days? 5 months? 5 years?

Everything always gets better, easier, gentler, kinder.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

YOU CAN DOOOO EEEEEEEEET.

That, and grow some cahones and share your gifts with the world, pretty pretty pretty please.

You are going to bless the world with your incredible talents. It is so flipping true.

Example: A beautiful woman took my Creative Goddess e-course two years ago. She hadn't painted for years and was feeling so lost and stuck in it. And during the course, holy dinger she opened up so much. It was like floodgates opened. And she sent me the most beautiful letter thanking me for helping her to heal that part of her.

This week, she opened up her store of her artworks. Selling art that heals the mother soul. And it really did heal my soul. My daughter is still so young, and like most new mamas, it has been an intense time adjusting to this new life of mine. When I saw Mel's artwork, I couldn't stop staring at it. It opened up a floodgate of healing and joy inside me.

And it felt like this incredible healing had come full circle.

I had courage, and shared my gifts with the world, and it helped to heal a woman.

A woman had courage, and shared her gifts with the world, and it healed me.

Imagine how amazing it would be to have your gifts healing other women.

We need you, sister!

Where can we connect with you?

Oh! I would so love to connect!

Who Am I?

source

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
-Winne the Pooh

I've been feeling a little lost the last few days. I've been focused on fighting the depression for the last few months, trying to overcome my fears and finding my joy again. As things level out, the depression has subsised, I've activly fighting fear everyday and joy is filling my days again, I'm finding that there is still a niggling voice inside my head, whispering over and over "but who are you?"

I've spent years feeling that who I am isn't good enough, that I don't count. I always felt that I was inferior to everyone else around me and that the things I liked/wanted/thought/did were wrong. So... I spent years trying to be someone else. Trying to be like others around me, trying to be something different depending on who I was with... trying to be who I thought they wanted me to be. Of course, that never worked. I was always chasing after this fictional person, always trying to figure out what people wanted from me. It caused me even more heartache.

Now, I'm on a mission for authenticity. But, after a lifetime of trying to be someone else, I'm struggling to figure out who I actually am. I still think that people won't like me for who I acutally am. I stuggle to give myself the power to stand up and say THIS IS ME. And I'm realising that I don't know who I am..... I need to delve deep inside me and work out the things that matter to me. But most importantly I need to learn to be proud of who I am, and unafraid to let others see me.

There have been many melancholy moments lately, an ache deep inside me, a sadness and a yearning although I'm not sure what for. Part of it is the season, for I always feel this way when autumn arrives. Part of it is the depression trying to take hold again. I'm strong enough now to know that things are fine. To be extra kind to myself when I am feeling blue. To sit tight and ride it out. To live in the moment and not worry about the future.

When I'm feeling melancholy, when the voices are whispering "no-one likes you" I can ignore them... remind myself that isn't true. Remind myself of the messages and visits from friends. Know that they wouldn't ask to meet up if they didn't want to, know that my thoughts are not always the truth.

This is me here, being authentic... admitting that I don't know who I am... and hoping that's ok to admit.
