don't believe everything you think >>>

learn to edit your thoughts. focus on the positive ones. ignore the negative thoughts. it's easy to fall into the trap of negative thinking and believing those thoughts. they drain us of our energy and prevent us from being fully present in the moment.

i know how easy it is to believe all the bad things that our mind tells us. "you're not good enough" "you're too fat/ugly/stupid" "you'll never be able to do it" believing those thoughts brings depression, and a crushing feeling of hopelessness. i've been there. i've also managed to come out the other side. i taught myself to focus on the positive, to ignore that little 'voice' inside my head telling me that i wasn't good enough.

smile - seriously, just smile. it will instantly lift your mood and make you feel happier

focus on the positive - teach yourself to only think positive thoughts.

surround yourself with positivity - find some quotes, or make your own, write them on post-it's and put them on your mirror, by your bed, in your purse, by the computer - any place that you'll see them throughout the day.

take action - all those things your mind tells you that you can't do? just do them. try one - and when you've done it, you can tell that negative thought where to get off

give thanks  - keep a gratitude journal, every night write down five things that made you happy that day. if you're feeling hopeless, read back through it and see how blessed you are

let go of perfection - no one is perfect, and it'd be pretty dull if we were. accept your mistakes and move on.

stuck in a rut?? >>>>>

sometimes we get stuck. creatively. things just stop working. the ideas stop coming. we burn out. here are my six top tips for when i am stuck in a rut. what is your favourite way to get the creative juices flowing?

1. Get outside
If I'm feeling really stuck, the first thing I do is switch the computer off and get out of the house - either into the garden or even better for a nice long walk in the countryside. It never fails to get my creative juices flowing.

2. Try something new.

If you normally paint, then get out the writing pad, if you normally knit then try baking... switch it up and step outside of your comfort zone.

3. Always have a pen and paper on you.

I carry a notebook everywhere and make lists almost obsesivley! Jot down ideas as they come to you, sketch things that catch your eye while out and about, stick in that leaf whose colour you love....

4. Turn the music up and dance..

5.  Write 'morning pages'

6. Answer these questions:

ask yourself:
what did i do as a child?
what or who made me happy?
what did i fill my days with?
what did i really not like?
what are my favourite memories?
what things and activities did i love?

What are your favourite ways to get the creative juices running again?

follow your heart >>>>>

while today i'm living the life that i always dreamed of, up until a few years ago I was still trying to please others and do 'what i should' not what i wanted. i suffered from bout after bout of depression, until i finally realised the mistake that i was making.

i'd spent my life trying to fit in, to be what i thought i should be, and often something different for each perosn i knew. that was a surefire recipe for disaster.

we only have one life, one chance to live our dreams and make ourselves happy. when a good friend told me to stop and think, hard, about what I wanted from this life, and to follow my dreams no matter how impossible they seem. i took her advice and realised what it was that made me happy - i started blogging, started putting myself out there, i set up an etsy shop, and {tried} to stop worrying what others thought about me.

after a few months, i no longer had to try -  following my heart and being proud to be myself started to come naturally. today my life is a far cry from what it once was. i'll admit there are the odd times i doubt myself, but i can look back on all i have achieved in the past couple of years and just how far i have come.

three steps to get you started:

one sit down and write down all the things you'd like to do, how you'd like your life to be and how you want to spend your days

two make an action plan of how you're going to get from where you are now to where you want to be {remember - babysteps}

three believe in yourself - this is the most important - you have to truly believe that you can do it, otherwise anything you attempt will only be half-hearted

and don't forget:

be who you want

I think there are times that we all envy others. We look, as an outsider, at their life and feel jealous that we are not them. We think that if only we were prettier, smarter, funnier, richer, happier, then everything would be ok. We spend our lifes trying to be who other people want us to be, or at least who we think they want us to be. Seeking our parents approval, our partners, our friends, societies... we do what we think we should. We forget to listen to our own hearts, to seek out who we are and what we want to be.

Not accepting ourselves is harmful and wasteful. Ignoring who we are to focus on what we could be.

"Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are."
Kurt Cobain
Take some time out, go outside, run around barefoot in the grass. Lie down and watch the clouds float by. Clear your mind and let the real you break free. Remind yourself of you, of the things you love, of the wants you have, of the life you dream of.

And then be you. 100% you... not a watered down version. Forget about treading on someone's toes. Forget about upsetting someone for not following their dream for your life.

Learn to love yourself unconditionally. Stop telling yourself " If only I were thinner" "If only I were smarter"...  Make a list of all the great things about yourself, all the skills you have, all the achievements you've made. If you're stuck rope in a good friend. Pin it up somewhere you can see it every single day.

Trust yourself... believe that your thoughts and beliefs are valid ~ and hold on to them. Don't change them to make someone else happy.

Don't try and be someone you are not... if you hate group situations, then that's ok. If you prefer staying in to going ok, that's fine. It is ok to be true to yourself, to please nobody buy you, to live the life you choose even if it is different to the 'norm'.

Above all else, remember:

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Connie Hozvicka

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Connie Hozvicka from Dirty Footprints Studio

Hi Connie. Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi Polly!! I'm super excited to be a part of your interview series!!! Thank you!  Thank you! Thank you!

Well, my name is Connie Hozvicka.  I am the guide to the FEARLESS Painting Adventure, an Artist, and the creative force behind Dirty Footprints Studio--which happens to be the name of both my business and my blog!  I LOVE Yoga, just recently dreaded my hair, drink smoothies like they are going out of style, and feel that my Creative Juicy Life is constantly expanding into bliss that I want nothing more in this life then to share this joy with others!

Do you work full time as an artist?
Yes I do!  This past May I finally became fully self employed and it has been the best decision of my entire life!

Is the life you lead now, the life you've always dreamt of?
Oh my goodness NO, but at the same time I feel like I'm living the dream!  For example, ten years ago when I was in Art School in Cleveland, Ohio if you told me that in ten years I would be living in the desert of Arizona, painting full time, an obsessive blogger, and teaching people from all over the world in online classes I would have seriously thought you were tripping on mushrooms!  But the thing is---I have always had BIG dreams--and I always follow those BIG dreams--and as I do, I notice that both myself and my dreams evolve.  So the great part is that you could have asked me ten years ago as well if I was living the dream--and without a doubt I would have said yes then too!  That's the beauty of my Creative Juicy Life! I am so, so blessed.

When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?
Wow Polly, this question really got me thinking.  The truth is, after deep reflection, my desire to help others has always been my inspiration.  When I used to teach Art full time in an elementary school I hated where I worked.  I would go to work and be miserable and feel like I was constantly swimming in a sea of negativity.  Finally, I decided that if I was "stuck" there, I needed to become very aware and find ways to make things more Creative Juicy for myself---so that later I could help others to navigate circumstances and experiences in their own life into more nourishing and empowering experiences as well.  I find that I no longer strongly resist difficult or uncomfortable situations---but instead embrace them, knowing that later I can be a source of strength, wisdom, and guidance to others and possibly offer them tools to help them through these times as well.

Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you over come it?
This is such an excellent question.  Ever since I decided to become self employed and create a life that truly comes from my heart--fear and I have become quite the dance partners.  This is huge, Polly. Seriously--HUGE.   Because, like many of us, I come from a long ancestry of fear--and I have seen many family members and friends build a life on it.  To be honest, for a long time, I did as well.  But something clicked.  I started to trust in myself and my intuition--and as I've done so--I keep learning again and again that there is nothing to really fear--because I have the answers---I know the way.  So lately I have not let fear dictate my decisions anymore--but rather to guide me in the right direction.  When I begin to feel fear I know I need to move closer to it--because it is there where the juice is and where I'll grow!

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?
Believe.  Believe.  Believe.  And believe some more.

And then believe even a few tiny more drops.

Anything and everything is possible.  That I tell you from my own experience--not just repeating some silly cliche.

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?
Well, I bet this answer is different for everyone...but for me, the three things that help make my life happy and radiant is number one LOVE.  Every day is an exercise in LOVE for me.  I create out of LOVE--I share out of LOVE--I live my life to be a beam of LOVE to others and myself.

Second, creativity.  I was born to create things--from paintings, to ideas, to tribes of kindred souls, to delicious smoothies.  My creativity keeps me going and always makes my life full and interesting.

Last, curiosity.  I am in a constant state of wonder or excitement about something!!!  I am always wanting to learn more about myself, my Creative Juicy Life, the lovely people in my life, and this world in general.  What would my days be like if there wasn't something to learn more about and the constant opportunity to grow! A lively curiosity is the way to go!

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Angie Muldowney

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Angie Muldowney

*Hi Angie , tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, Polly! Well, I'm 41 (*breathe* it's just a number, just a number), I married Mark, a wonderfully geeky, musical man on 9.9.99.

We live (just the two of us) in Southampton; a curious little city on south coast of England and my #1 passion is photography!

I have the city, the sea and a forest on my doorstep and I utilise them all in my photography whenever I can. I am SO lucky as I have an amazing digital SLR and fantastic lenses at my disposal. Not only that but a big family of film cameras, ranging from a huge soviet 'Hasselblad-ski', lomo cameras, antique Brownies, my precious, precious Polaroids and even one I found in a skip (dumpster)!

All my camera gear has been paid for through me selling my photographs. This is good as it allays much of the guilt I would otherwise feel about adopting all these odd an archaic (honestly, I have LOTS). My work is for sale online and in galleries and it's amazing to think that in homes across the globe people have chosen one of MY photos to adorn their walls. Staggering. I love sharing all my photographic adventures on my blog and on flickr. Oh, I love the internet!

going in
Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?
I have a day job as well as my lovely photography projects to keep me busy, so my days are jam-packed!
For a while I was rather resentful that I had to do a job that wasn't what I loved doing and that I had to give up all my precious time. Now though I've come to see the benefits of separating out what I love doing from what I need to do to pay the bills. I wonder if I might grow a little resentful of my ideas, projects and photos if they were the means to my income - and that maybe I wouldn't experiment as much and stick to safe and known ideas.

That's not to say I wouldn't relish the opportunity and adventure of self-employment but in these difficult financial times I am grateful for the stability I am lucky enough to have. One day!

Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?
Ever since I was a child right through to today I have woken each morning with a new idea; a new dream. (I think a person can have too many ideas!) So, in that respect it's probably not the life I dreamt of. Saying that I always knew I wanted to do something artistic so I am pleased that that's a reality. I also dreamt I'd be married to Simon Le Bon and living on a tropical island... these things did not happen.
When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?
The consequence of having lots and lots of ideas is that it doesn't leave too much time for sticking to just one of them and seeing it through to the end! This is what I find most difficult and something I really haven't found an answer for yet. I'm like a light-bulb that's switched on, burning bright with ideas and buzzing with exciting plans.

And then off.

I have no dimmer switch, there's nothing in between.

This is an analogy appropriate for lots of things in my life - all or nothing. When the switch is 'off', when it feels too impossible to write, create or even contemplate picking up a camera I allow myself a day or two off from these things and indulge in different creative worlds. Maybe I'll watch a film, go to an art gallery, listen to new music. Baking, knitting, gardening - things I'm not very good at but that use different bits of my brain. Soon enough though the switch is back on again. Thankfully!

Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?
Sometimes I think I am literally going crazy because of the whirlwind of thoughts and ideas swirling around my brain and I have to be careful that I don't dwell too closely on the reality of what little time I have to try and fulfil all of them. I have to force myself to focus on one thing at a time and visualise the satisfaction I'll get from completing something - and when I DO complete something this is the best thing of all for conquering fears.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?
Be gentle with yourself, you'll be your own worst critic so start sharing your creative side with friends and/or online because I promise you the nurturing and loving endorsements you'll receive will become a great sounding board and reality check for you and help you on the road to realising how great you really are!
Oh, and don't hang around, give it a go NOW i.e. if you want to be a photographer be one now, use the camera on your phone, it's about you, not the equipment - same applies to anything creative, a journey starts with one small step,

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?
I think you need... love. Whether of a person, a place, a hobby, these are all good and important but mainly you need love of yourself.

If you're like me you may find this quite a challenge, but striving towards it is at least is a positive and enriching thing. There are great websites and communities online to help you along this path - check out sites like White Hot Truth (I'm currently working my way through Danielle's wonderful e-book 'The White Hot Truth') and Susannah Conway (I can heartily recommend Susannah's 'Unravelling' e-course).

Living LIfe Your Way....Interview with Mon

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

*Hi Mon , tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a listener with a big heart and blunt tongue. After living in Uruguay, Australia, and England, I'm currently in Montenegro, up a mountain, by the sea, with a hubby and toddler. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

*Aside from your blogs, what else keeps you busy?

Mostly my spirited 2.5 yr-old girl. I'm an Intuitive Mentor, a spiritual life coach of sorts. But that's not a paid gig (yet). I also, take photographs, create mixed media art, crochet, I help bloggers with web/blog design, cook, do yoga, am writing a book, and read, and read, and read. Yet I have strived for simplicity in the last two years, so I aim for not being busy. I spread all the above out thinly. I'm an ideas person, so it takes work to choose focus or a nap instead of something else to do.

*Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?

No. I once dreamt of being an actress, an educational psychologist, a professional photographer, a natural health therapist (and others!). Many choices were down to trying to push my life into what others thought it should be. Yet when I have allowed myself to be fully me, I have always been about the process. It didn't worry me to 'become something'. To be respectable with a 'proper' career. I love tasting life. When I've been at peace with myself, I have never dreamt too far ahead.

*When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

The belief that this is my one life. Even if you believe in reincarnation, this is still one specific life. I believe it's
precious. I believe it's amazing. I consider myself an optimistic realist. I don't view life with rose-tinted glasses, and I do have a cynical streak. Yet I always trust that something good is around the corner. But we have to be open to receive it. So when I've been at my lowest, I allow the dark emotions, and then work my way out, to be ready. I also view difficulties as opportunities for growth as a person.

*Fear affects most of us at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?

I'm quite audacious. You can't live life fully if you're timid. Yet I've spent most of life owning the fear of trying to be perfect. I feared for many years not being good enough to be an artist, or writer, or mentor. I used to think if I couldn't do it perfectly, there was no point. And when you think like that, you're consumed in Fear, even if you can't see it. Instead of doing what you love, you put it off. Crazy. It took me a loooong time to work out two simple facts. The doing is everything. And, a satisfying result is not the same thing as a perfect result.

*What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

I'm terrible at this sort of advice. Actually, I wrote a post recently, just do it. Synchronicity!

*What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

This list might change....

An acceptance of and work on your Shadows.
When we walk life wounded, we walk an obstacle-ridden path.
Compassion, for yourself and others. This gives us an enormous capacity for gentleness towards ourselves and empathy with others.
Gratitude for what you already have. Focusing on what you don't have and/or still want to have is living half a life.

*Where can we connect with you?

My main cyberhome is over at Holistic Mama. Doing arty things at Bohemian Shadows. Healing and creating community at Spiral Sisters.

Living Life Your Way....Interview with Juliette Crane

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

Hi Juliette , tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a Mixed Media Painter and I just love anything full of imagination and color. I’ve always been doing something creative (making cards, jewelry, sewing, writing, gardening, baking, floral design), but if I ask myself what I always wanted to do, but never thought I could, I would say painting. I also fill my life with eating good food, traveling, yoga and enjoying the sunshine!

Have you always considered yourself a 'professional artist'?
Not at all. I always knew I was an artist, but I didn’t actually feel that mattered or that I could ever do anything with it professionally until the Fall of 2009. Earlier that year, I’d finished writing a novel for children, then lost my job, and realized I was seriously burned out and unhappy. Luckily, a friend of mine started up an Artist’s Way group (reading Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way) and having that supportive creative group gave me the confidence to start painting (which I hadn’t done in 10 years).
I remembered then how much I enjoyed painting and couldn’t stop! People told me I should exhibit my art somewhere and luckily there was a gallery space at our local library. I put my art up there and got such wonderful feedback and loved painting so much, I decided to put all of my creative energy into getting my art out into the world. I posted my paintings as prints and art jewelry on etsy, started a blog, got on facebook and twitter, and keep exhibiting my artwork locally and constantly tell everyone what i do.

Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?
Absolutely. I feel like everything I’ve ever done, professionally and otherwise, has prepared me for what I’m doing now. The art creation part of it is maybe thirty percent of my time with my creative business. The rest is all about marketing, publicity, networking, blogging, photographing etc.

I’ve had careers as a graphic designer, photographer, journalist, web designer and programmer (and more!) and I use all of those skills now. For me, it just makes a huge difference that I’m using them for my own projects and art and not to promote something else. And the best part is that all of my outside interests (like caring for and wanting to inspire others) have found their way into what I’m doing. So I get to meet the most wonderful people who are also passionate about life and beauty and following their hearts.

When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?
The greatest inspiration for me is knowing that if I keep going and pushing through, then others can use my experiences and story as their inspiration. That’s something I didn’t know could happen until I started blogging about my life as an artist.

I also tend to look back at my own experiences and use them to keep myself going. For awhile I was always going through the same difficulties and standing in my own way. What helped me, was starting a journal where I document all of the things I’m always going through-like I often go through the feeling that no one is looking at my art and that what I do doesn’t matter. So in my journal, I’ve reminded myself I often feel this way and list what’s worked before to get through it-getting in touch with a supportive community, painting, taking a break, doing something nice for myself. Whatever I’m going through, I’ve realized those are often the same answers and it just helps me to remember it’s all just part of the ebb and flow.

As an artist, I also started documenting my painting process. This became a way for me to overcome all of the doubts that always come up in my head whenever I paint. There’s almost always a point where I feel lost, like I’m no good, I can’t paint anymore, it’ll never turn out. Especially when I’m trying to do something new. But seeing step by step photos helped me realize, those doubts always come up and time and time again, I figure it out. When I see initial photos of a piece I have the proof. And even if I’m not completely happy with a painting, I push through, and always learn something. That undoubtedly helps my next piece or the one after that. And that is very comforting.

Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?
I was always scared to pursue my dream of being a painter. That’s why I stopped painting after college and didn’t start again for ten years. I wasn’t so much scared of people seeing my art, but more so I didn’t think anyone would really care about it. I had this impression that being a creative person wasn’t worthwhile. That’s what stopped me from pursuing my dream. And having the support of my husband helped me deal with it. And once he started showing friends and family my paintings whenever they’d stop by, they started giving me the encouragement to have a local exhibition at our public library. And the support just sort of blossomed from there. Building a supportive community and finding like-minded people has been huge for me. And so much of that happened from having a blog.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?
My advice to others is to follow your instincts and build a supportive community for yourself, whether it’s locally, at home or online. And keep going. If you know you’re passion, go with it, honor and nourish it. If you think you don’t have anything you’re passionate about or “good at” just keep trying things and something will click or lead you to the next amazing thing. Just follow whatever it is that makes you happiest, and if you want to make a career out of it, ask lots and lots of questions and create your own path. Don’t think there’s one way of doing something. There’s no right or wrong way, but there’s always a way.

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?
I’ve found it’s a balance of lots of things. And for me, it’s been so important to figure out what makes me happy and then making sure I am doing exactly that. And doing those things most! There’s a book called the happiness project where the author documents their life to figure out what makes them happy. It’s a good read. I started treating my life like a scientific project and carrying a pocket notebook and actually writing down when I was smiling or feeling happiness and joy. I realized a lot of the things I thought made me happy like having lots of hip events to attend and living in the city-those things didn’t really make me happy. When I was honest with myself, taking walks in the woods, reading a book I loved and watching 80’s movies with my husband really made me happy.

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Goddess Leonie

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Goddess Leonie

Hi Leonie, tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Why of coursicles!

Here's me in dot points:
  1. I'm totally in love with life.
  2. I see a goddess in every woman.
  3. I'm an artist, writer & goddess guide. And I help women to see what I see... the goddess inside them. Life is better when you know you are a goddess!
  4. I have an exquisite baby daughter, Ostara Faith Avalon.
  5. I am in love with a wise man who is also very hot.
  6. We live in my grandmother's old cottage in tropical paradise.

Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?

I'm very blessed to have a job that is my dream come true, and also manages to support my wee family so that my love and I can stay at home with our daughter.

I have been full time as a goddess for seven months, and was working part time as an editor before then as I grew my business. I took a few years of working part time to get my business to a point that it could really support my family happily.

Is your business as it is now something you've always dreamt of?

Heck yeah!

I love saying that my job is being a goddess!

All of us have our fears, some rule stronger than others. What part has fear played in your life?

Hmmmm. Good question.

For me, I use fear as medicine. As a teaching.

Fear is always leading me back home, to wisdom, knowing and love.

I was afraid of going full-time with my business. But it wasn't a fear that was based in practicality or logic. I knew that my business could earn enough. I was just afraid of the what-ifs: The what if I ran out of ideas? Or luck? What if, like Henny Penny, the sky fell in one day?

But I grew some cahones, and I leapt.

My love and I left the city and our public service jobs. We bought a small cottage {my grandmother's!} in tropical paradise. We did something that took our breath away. And it was perfect.

And you know what? Even if something does happen. Even if one of my fears does come true. I'll always be glad that we leapt. We will always just find the next step of what we need to do, and do it.

It's simple.

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

1. An attitude like my grandmother's. Her motto is this: "I woke up this morning, and I was still breathing, so I thought: Today is going to be a GREAT DAY!"

2. An attitude like my mother's. Her motto is this: "Everything is always going to turn out okay."

3. An attitude like mine: My motto is this: "Joy is an option."

and the bonus:

4. An attitude like my daughter's. Her motto is this: "I rock!"

When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

The 5 Rule.

How will this still affect me in 5 minutes? 5 days? 5 months? 5 years?

Everything always gets better, easier, gentler, kinder.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

YOU CAN DOOOO EEEEEEEEET.

That, and grow some cahones and share your gifts with the world, pretty pretty pretty please.

You are going to bless the world with your incredible talents. It is so flipping true.

Example: A beautiful woman took my Creative Goddess e-course two years ago. She hadn't painted for years and was feeling so lost and stuck in it. And during the course, holy dinger she opened up so much. It was like floodgates opened. And she sent me the most beautiful letter thanking me for helping her to heal that part of her.

This week, she opened up her store of her artworks. Selling art that heals the mother soul. And it really did heal my soul. My daughter is still so young, and like most new mamas, it has been an intense time adjusting to this new life of mine. When I saw Mel's artwork, I couldn't stop staring at it. It opened up a floodgate of healing and joy inside me.

And it felt like this incredible healing had come full circle.

I had courage, and shared my gifts with the world, and it helped to heal a woman.

A woman had courage, and shared her gifts with the world, and it healed me.

Imagine how amazing it would be to have your gifts healing other women.

We need you, sister!

Be here now

One thing I'm working on right now is to try and live here and now in THIS moment. Life can get so hectic, we rush through our days never truly experiencing what is around us. Living in the moment is one key step I can make along this path to happiness and contentment. When my depression is at it's worst I'm constantly looking to the future, thinking about what could make me happy, or where I need to be to be content in my life. By focusing on what I don't have (or perceive not to have) I'm denying all the good that is in my life RIGHT NOW. I get so wound up in my thoughts that I lose track of what is real.

There is beauty in every moment, and even through the harder moments we can experience something beautiful if we allow ourselves too.

My thinking up until now has always been very black and white. All or nothing. Everything is fantastic or totally bloody awful. A bad moment was dark clouds and sadness. I never saw the middle ground. One moment of sadness and I would allow it to pull me all the way down. I'd focus on that, long after that moment had passed, and ignore what was going on now.

A quote I read somewhere (and I can't for the life of me find it again now!) stated that:
Mindful people are happier, more exuberant, more empathetic, and more secure. They have higher self-esteem and are more accepting of their own weaknesses. Anchoring awareness in the here and now reduces the kinds of impulsivity and reactivity that underlie depression, binge eating, and attention problems. Mindful people can hear negative feedback without feeling threatened. They fight less with their romantic partners and are more accommodating and less defensive. As a result, mindful couples have more satisfying relationships.
I'm learning to focus on NOW. To avoid worrying about what has been, or might be.  To stop wishing for things that I don't have and instead enjoy the things that I do. It's all to easy to think

"oh, when I have x,y and z THEN I'll be happy"

Focusing on what is happening in the present is keeping me grounded, savouring the many moments of joy that make up each and every day is helping me to fight the negative thoughts that run through my mind. I'm choosing to focus on the good, each time a negative thought pops up, I acknowledge it but then find something positive to replace it with.

I AM NOT MY THOUGHTS

I realised that I love the simple things in life. I don't need lots of money, a big house, mountains of possessions to be happy. I have all I need in life to be happy already - I just have to focus on them. I'm re-learning every day to be thankful for what we have and to not let life pass me by any longer.
