stuck in a rut?? >>>>>

sometimes we get stuck. creatively. things just stop working. the ideas stop coming. we burn out. here are my six top tips for when i am stuck in a rut. what is your favourite way to get the creative juices flowing?

1. Get outside.
If I'm feeling really stuck, the first thing I do is switch the computer off and get out of the house - either into the garden or even better for a nice long walk in the countryside. It never fails to get my creative juices flowing.

2. Try something new.

If you normally paint, then get out the writing pad, if you normally knit then try baking... switch it up and step outside of your comfort zone.

3. Always have a pen and paper on you.

I carry a notebook everywhere and make lists almost obsesivley! Jot down ideas as they come to you, sketch things that catch your eye while out and about, stick in that leaf whose colour you love....

4. Turn the music up and dance..

5.  Write 'morning pages'

6. Answer these questions:

ask yourself:
what did i do as a child?
what or who made me happy?
what did i fill my days with?
what did i really not like?
what are my favourite memories?
what things and activities did i love?

What are your favourite ways to get the creative juices running again?

find your creativity

at age five we engage in creative tasks 98 times a day - by the time we get to 44 that falls on average to just twice a day!! it seems the older we get, the stronger our fear of not being good enough. yet we are all creative beings - and being creative can enrich our lives so much.

a lifetime of being told to colour inside the lines, to colour things a certain colour, to draw excatly what you were told has stifled our creativity.

the key to getting it back is to overcome our fear of being wrong. of creating to make ourselves happy not to be told 'well done' by others. to get back to the freedom and natural joy we had as a child.

ask yoruself:
what did i do as a child?
what or who made me happy?
what did i fill my days with?
what did i really not like?
what are my favourite memories?
what things and activities did i love?

give yourself permission to start creating again - pick up your knitting needles, borrow the kiddos crayons. close your eyes, listen to your heart and just create.

if you need a helping hand, the wonderful goddess leonie is running another session of her popular creative goddess e-course, starting april 1st.

pinch, punch, first of the month

can you believe it's february?? the month has started here with beautiful sunny skies - albeit it freezing cold too!! i'm looking forward to all that february has to offer - i have some great things planned for the blog as well as some fun IRL stuff too

we're still a house full of sick people - my cold seems to be lingering and the kiddos all have it too. there hasn't been much sleep to be had here for the past few nights. to top it all off, miss baya had an accident with a pan of hot water on monday. thankfully she's not badly burnt, i managed to get her out of the way, so only a little splashed back onto her leg rather than pouring all over her. still, she has quite the burn on her leg, poor baby.

i finally got around to tackling a couple of projects on my to-do-list yesterday - a glitter lampshade for the girls room {i saw the idea here} and the doily lampshade that has been on my list for almost a year :O here's a couple of pics - I'll take a better one of the doily lamp when it's dry and hung up!

also - you should check out my awesome  new sponsors --->  they're a bunch of amazing ladies!!!

here are a few of my favourite posts from january

* our day in pictures

Songs for a Sunday

Good morning!! Hope you're all having a great weekend :) the Mr's taken the kiddos out to the park for an hour this morning, so I'm enjoying a little time to myself! A friend emailed me a link to this music video yesterday and I ♥♥♥ it so much! It is so beautiful and moving, i've been listening to it {and some other of their songs} pretty much constantly!

also yesterday I managed to squeeze in a little crafty time... I need my daily dose of creativity to keep my soul happy! Here's a couple images of what I drew

Now I'm off to do a few crafty things while I have the house to myself :)

What I Wore Wednesday - down by the river

Super casual outfit post - dressed to stay cool down by the river! We went to a different stretch of river yesterday, thankfully it wasn't as humid as Monday but we still enjoyed cooling off in the water. The girls and their daddy had fun building a dam, and I just chilled out on the blanket! Two days of relaxing in the sun and I feel as though my batteries are fully recharged. My mind's teaming with ideas too - seems some down time does wonders for my creativity!

This top is one of my favouite pillowcase tops - I just love the colours of the granny square!

Shorts - cuttoffs
Shoes - Dorothy Perkins

I've been busy making some new clothing this week - a couple of pieces I've kept for myself, the rest will be up in the shop hopefully next week. I'm putting the finishing touches to my new blog design which will be unveiled on Friday - I can't wait! I'm also working on my first ever custom painting - something I've been thinking about for a while, and am so happy to be doing it!

I'm feeling truly blessed this week - life is perfect right now and I'm one lucky lady to live the life I do :)

yummy icecreams to cool off!

Re-organization

Although I'm still sick and supposed to be taking it easy (!) I spent some of yesterday doing some more re-organizing of my house. It's quite a little house, especially with 5 people living in it. I love it very much, it has bags of character, plus a lovely little garden with our own private woods at the bottom. Still, I think our little family is outgrowing it. Lola at nearly 8 is desperate to have a bedroom of her own. We only have 2 bedrooms, and the baby is still in with us. I'm trying to get my head around the idea of moving house (again) plus trying to decide if this town is where we want to stay.

Ideally I'd love to move to the South of England, Devon or Cornwall would be great! Just have to get my husband round to my way of thinking (as well as finding some pennies to finance a move).

Anyhoos - back to what I'd planned to write! I'm trying to do some reorganizing and tidying. I bought a new shelving unit for the living room, mainly to store some of my fabric stash on. I sent G off to buy one the same (or so I thought) as one we already have. But after I'd made it I discovered it was actually 3 inches wider than the other and so didn't fit right into the nook I'd planned on putting it in!

fabric storage
it's hard to see, but this was supposed to be the other way round, right in the corner!
But still - the new shelf's freed up a table that was just right for housing my sewing machine, so now I have a (little) corner for my sewing machine to live. No more having to get it out and put it away every time I want to use it!! Hopefully that will help my goal of doing something creative every day! I'm itching to get sewing now!

sewing nook
tucked in a corner by the fridge freezer!

Plus in the cupboard under the stairs, I found a couple of gems that were left here from previous tenants (mine now!)
vintage sewing machine
There's another old sewing machine under there too, but it was buried in junk and I couldn't get to it today!

funky painting
funky painting was hiding under the stairs too!

Goal #1

Easy one to start off with. I already try and do this every day anyway. Creating is my therapy - it's fun and makes me feel good. It doesn't have to take much time, the idea isn't to do a whole painting every day, just find 5 minutes or half an hour to do something.... take a photo, write a poem, knit a few rows, paint a little, sew...anything!

I'll be back tomorrow with goal #2! Are you setting goals for the year?? Leave me a comment to tell me yours or link to your blog!

p.s - Living Life Your Way will resume next Monday. I've looking for more people to be featured. If you're interested or want to nominate someone email me!

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Sarah Stevens

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Sarah Stevens from {Vie Boheme}

Hi Sarah , tell us a little about yourself. Asides from your blog, what else do you do?

Thank you so much for having me beautiful Pixie Polly! I'm honored that you've invited me to your table to chat.

Let's see. Right now, I'm a non-traditional student at Portland State University and I'm working on my last year of school before getting my Bachelor of Arts in Studio Practices. I spend the bulk of my time these days researching and working on art projects in the painting studio. But I'm also a photographer & mama to a very special 4 year old named Skye. For the past year, I've been involved in the exciting process of starting my own business, {Vie Boheme} Photography.

Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?

You know--it's funny you should you ask. Eleven years ago I dreamed of attending school to get a degree in art; envisioned myself painting in a studio until late in the night and going to lectures by important contemporary artists. And a couple days ago, as I carried an awkwardly large drawing portfolio and two bags of art supplies across campus, a sudden wave of clarity overtook me.

Not only had I stayed in the studio until 12:30am the previous day, but I had also just recently participated in a lecture by an amazing activist artist! Something about stepping off the curb and looking down the busy Portland street that day was autumn magic. And I finally recognize the truth of my journey--that I am most certainly in the midst of living my dreams.

When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going? I adore discussing questions of the heart. My dearest inspirations are art, earth, music, family and friends. They are my soul mates. And, at one time or another, all of these loves and lovers have convinced me to keep fighting the good fight. In the dark times, they chorus my soul's mission of purpose. That I exist for a reason. And that I am here to spread light even in the darkness. Love is nuzzled at the core of everything I do. And I believe that peace will prevail over difficulty, even in my own heart. Most of all, it is my peaceful idealism, a vision of the best of all possible worlds, that keeps me afloat during difficult times.

Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?

When I was 15, I was diagnosed with manic depression. Recently, I was diagnosed with anxiety and PTSD as well. I know fear so intimately that sometimes getting out of bed feels like a battle. But, I refuse to let it rule my life! And, I've learned a host of tools and tricks for keeping my fears in their proper place. In fact, I don't believe fear is something that needs to be overcome at all. It just needs to be firmly guided.

For me, that means cultivating a healthy relationship with my fears. I do my best to stay grounded in practices that nourish my soul. Art. Yoga. Exercise. Organic foods. Time in nature. Time with family. Journaling. Meditation. Lots of water. Good music. Friends. Dancing. Travel. Exploration. Deep breathing. Education.

The more I lean into these practices in my life, the more the fear changes from a thundering loud voice, to just a restless whisper. Of course, she's always there. But, when I'm doing my soul's work, the things that are good for my body and mama earth, I am more inclined to look on my fears with love and patience than with anger or contempt. And, when I listen to my fears lovingly, my decisions regarding her advice are much healthier.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

Living a life of your dreams means putting everything you've got toward your vision. Blood. Sweat. Tears. Paper cuts. Late nights. All of it! It takes tenacity and the certitude that you are working toward something meaningful. Your inner demons are your worst critics and they will try to get the best of you. Don't let them. Take good care of yourself. The world needs you at your best.

We each only get this one chance at this one particular beautiful life to make it worthwhile. Once you commit to following your heart, you've got to hold onto your dream with everything you've got. Don't ever give up! And always remember that you are gorgeous, brave and as worthy as anyone on this planet to make your wildest dreams come true!

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

Definitely Love. Creativity. And connection with nature. If we treat mama earth with love and respect, she showers us with fruit and makes our lives infinitely rich. When we pursue the cosmic creative spark that animates us and all things, we find joys beyond our wildest dreams. And when our hearts are grounded in love, we can heal the world.

Where can we connect with you?

Fall quarter has been super busy for me. Unfortunately my online time is limited until December. But, I check my e-mail every day. And you can still connect with me at my blog, {Vie Boheme} and at Light Chasing. Or you can catch me on facebook, twitter, and flickr.

Thanks Sarah!

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Angie Muldowney

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Angie Muldowney

*Hi Angie , tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, Polly! Well, I'm 41 (*breathe* it's just a number, just a number), I married Mark, a wonderfully geeky, musical man on 9.9.99.

We live (just the two of us) in Southampton; a curious little city on south coast of England and my #1 passion is photography!

I have the city, the sea and a forest on my doorstep and I utilise them all in my photography whenever I can. I am SO lucky as I have an amazing digital SLR and fantastic lenses at my disposal. Not only that but a big family of film cameras, ranging from a huge soviet 'Hasselblad-ski', lomo cameras, antique Brownies, my precious, precious Polaroids and even one I found in a skip (dumpster)!

All my camera gear has been paid for through me selling my photographs. This is good as it allays much of the guilt I would otherwise feel about adopting all these odd an archaic (honestly, I have LOTS). My work is for sale online and in galleries and it's amazing to think that in homes across the globe people have chosen one of MY photos to adorn their walls. Staggering. I love sharing all my photographic adventures on my blog and on flickr. Oh, I love the internet!

going in
Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?
I have a day job as well as my lovely photography projects to keep me busy, so my days are jam-packed!
For a while I was rather resentful that I had to do a job that wasn't what I loved doing and that I had to give up all my precious time. Now though I've come to see the benefits of separating out what I love doing from what I need to do to pay the bills. I wonder if I might grow a little resentful of my ideas, projects and photos if they were the means to my income - and that maybe I wouldn't experiment as much and stick to safe and known ideas.

That's not to say I wouldn't relish the opportunity and adventure of self-employment but in these difficult financial times I am grateful for the stability I am lucky enough to have. One day!

Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?
Ever since I was a child right through to today I have woken each morning with a new idea; a new dream. (I think a person can have too many ideas!) So, in that respect it's probably not the life I dreamt of. Saying that I always knew I wanted to do something artistic so I am pleased that that's a reality. I also dreamt I'd be married to Simon Le Bon and living on a tropical island... these things did not happen.
When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?
The consequence of having lots and lots of ideas is that it doesn't leave too much time for sticking to just one of them and seeing it through to the end! This is what I find most difficult and something I really haven't found an answer for yet. I'm like a light-bulb that's switched on, burning bright with ideas and buzzing with exciting plans.

And then off.

I have no dimmer switch, there's nothing in between.

This is an analogy appropriate for lots of things in my life - all or nothing. When the switch is 'off', when it feels too impossible to write, create or even contemplate picking up a camera I allow myself a day or two off from these things and indulge in different creative worlds. Maybe I'll watch a film, go to an art gallery, listen to new music. Baking, knitting, gardening - things I'm not very good at but that use different bits of my brain. Soon enough though the switch is back on again. Thankfully!

Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?
Sometimes I think I am literally going crazy because of the whirlwind of thoughts and ideas swirling around my brain and I have to be careful that I don't dwell too closely on the reality of what little time I have to try and fulfil all of them. I have to force myself to focus on one thing at a time and visualise the satisfaction I'll get from completing something - and when I DO complete something this is the best thing of all for conquering fears.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?
Be gentle with yourself, you'll be your own worst critic so start sharing your creative side with friends and/or online because I promise you the nurturing and loving endorsements you'll receive will become a great sounding board and reality check for you and help you on the road to realising how great you really are!
Oh, and don't hang around, give it a go NOW i.e. if you want to be a photographer be one now, use the camera on your phone, it's about you, not the equipment - same applies to anything creative, a journey starts with one small step,

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?
I think you need... love. Whether of a person, a place, a hobby, these are all good and important but mainly you need love of yourself.

If you're like me you may find this quite a challenge, but striving towards it is at least is a positive and enriching thing. There are great websites and communities online to help you along this path - check out sites like White Hot Truth (I'm currently working my way through Danielle's wonderful e-book 'The White Hot Truth') and Susannah Conway (I can heartily recommend Susannah's 'Unravelling' e-course).

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Goddess Leonie

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Goddess Leonie

Hi Leonie, tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Why of coursicles!

Here's me in dot points:
  1. I'm totally in love with life.
  2. I see a goddess in every woman.
  3. I'm an artist, writer & goddess guide. And I help women to see what I see... the goddess inside them. Life is better when you know you are a goddess!
  4. I have an exquisite baby daughter, Ostara Faith Avalon.
  5. I am in love with a wise man who is also very hot.
  6. We live in my grandmother's old cottage in tropical paradise.

Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?

I'm very blessed to have a job that is my dream come true, and also manages to support my wee family so that my love and I can stay at home with our daughter.

I have been full time as a goddess for seven months, and was working part time as an editor before then as I grew my business. I took a few years of working part time to get my business to a point that it could really support my family happily.

Is your business as it is now something you've always dreamt of?

Heck yeah!

I love saying that my job is being a goddess!

All of us have our fears, some rule stronger than others. What part has fear played in your life?

Hmmmm. Good question.

For me, I use fear as medicine. As a teaching.

Fear is always leading me back home, to wisdom, knowing and love.

I was afraid of going full-time with my business. But it wasn't a fear that was based in practicality or logic. I knew that my business could earn enough. I was just afraid of the what-ifs: The what if I ran out of ideas? Or luck? What if, like Henny Penny, the sky fell in one day?

But I grew some cahones, and I leapt.

My love and I left the city and our public service jobs. We bought a small cottage {my grandmother's!} in tropical paradise. We did something that took our breath away. And it was perfect.

And you know what? Even if something does happen. Even if one of my fears does come true. I'll always be glad that we leapt. We will always just find the next step of what we need to do, and do it.

It's simple.

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

1. An attitude like my grandmother's. Her motto is this: "I woke up this morning, and I was still breathing, so I thought: Today is going to be a GREAT DAY!"

2. An attitude like my mother's. Her motto is this: "Everything is always going to turn out okay."

3. An attitude like mine: My motto is this: "Joy is an option."

and the bonus:

4. An attitude like my daughter's. Her motto is this: "I rock!"

When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

The 5 Rule.

How will this still affect me in 5 minutes? 5 days? 5 months? 5 years?

Everything always gets better, easier, gentler, kinder.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

YOU CAN DOOOO EEEEEEEEET.

That, and grow some cahones and share your gifts with the world, pretty pretty pretty please.

You are going to bless the world with your incredible talents. It is so flipping true.

Example: A beautiful woman took my Creative Goddess e-course two years ago. She hadn't painted for years and was feeling so lost and stuck in it. And during the course, holy dinger she opened up so much. It was like floodgates opened. And she sent me the most beautiful letter thanking me for helping her to heal that part of her.

This week, she opened up her store of her artworks. Selling art that heals the mother soul. And it really did heal my soul. My daughter is still so young, and like most new mamas, it has been an intense time adjusting to this new life of mine. When I saw Mel's artwork, I couldn't stop staring at it. It opened up a floodgate of healing and joy inside me.

And it felt like this incredible healing had come full circle.

I had courage, and shared my gifts with the world, and it helped to heal a woman.

A woman had courage, and shared her gifts with the world, and it healed me.

Imagine how amazing it would be to have your gifts healing other women.

We need you, sister!
