Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Angie Muldowney

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Angie Muldowney

*Hi Angie , tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, Polly! Well, I'm 41 (*breathe* it's just a number, just a number), I married Mark, a wonderfully geeky, musical man on 9.9.99.

We live (just the two of us) in Southampton; a curious little city on south coast of England and my #1 passion is photography!

I have the city, the sea and a forest on my doorstep and I utilise them all in my photography whenever I can. I am SO lucky as I have an amazing digital SLR and fantastic lenses at my disposal. Not only that but a big family of film cameras, ranging from a huge soviet 'Hasselblad-ski', lomo cameras, antique Brownies, my precious, precious Polaroids and even one I found in a skip (dumpster)!

All my camera gear has been paid for through me selling my photographs. This is good as it allays much of the guilt I would otherwise feel about adopting all these odd an archaic (honestly, I have LOTS). My work is for sale online and in galleries and it's amazing to think that in homes across the globe people have chosen one of MY photos to adorn their walls. Staggering. I love sharing all my photographic adventures on my blog and on flickr. Oh, I love the internet!

going in
Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?
I have a day job as well as my lovely photography projects to keep me busy, so my days are jam-packed!
For a while I was rather resentful that I had to do a job that wasn't what I loved doing and that I had to give up all my precious time. Now though I've come to see the benefits of separating out what I love doing from what I need to do to pay the bills. I wonder if I might grow a little resentful of my ideas, projects and photos if they were the means to my income - and that maybe I wouldn't experiment as much and stick to safe and known ideas.

That's not to say I wouldn't relish the opportunity and adventure of self-employment but in these difficult financial times I am grateful for the stability I am lucky enough to have. One day!

Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?
Ever since I was a child right through to today I have woken each morning with a new idea; a new dream. (I think a person can have too many ideas!) So, in that respect it's probably not the life I dreamt of. Saying that I always knew I wanted to do something artistic so I am pleased that that's a reality. I also dreamt I'd be married to Simon Le Bon and living on a tropical island... these things did not happen.
When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?
The consequence of having lots and lots of ideas is that it doesn't leave too much time for sticking to just one of them and seeing it through to the end! This is what I find most difficult and something I really haven't found an answer for yet. I'm like a light-bulb that's switched on, burning bright with ideas and buzzing with exciting plans.

And then off.

I have no dimmer switch, there's nothing in between.

This is an analogy appropriate for lots of things in my life - all or nothing. When the switch is 'off', when it feels too impossible to write, create or even contemplate picking up a camera I allow myself a day or two off from these things and indulge in different creative worlds. Maybe I'll watch a film, go to an art gallery, listen to new music. Baking, knitting, gardening - things I'm not very good at but that use different bits of my brain. Soon enough though the switch is back on again. Thankfully!

Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?
Sometimes I think I am literally going crazy because of the whirlwind of thoughts and ideas swirling around my brain and I have to be careful that I don't dwell too closely on the reality of what little time I have to try and fulfil all of them. I have to force myself to focus on one thing at a time and visualise the satisfaction I'll get from completing something - and when I DO complete something this is the best thing of all for conquering fears.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?
Be gentle with yourself, you'll be your own worst critic so start sharing your creative side with friends and/or online because I promise you the nurturing and loving endorsements you'll receive will become a great sounding board and reality check for you and help you on the road to realising how great you really are!
Oh, and don't hang around, give it a go NOW i.e. if you want to be a photographer be one now, use the camera on your phone, it's about you, not the equipment - same applies to anything creative, a journey starts with one small step,

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?
I think you need... love. Whether of a person, a place, a hobby, these are all good and important but mainly you need love of yourself.

If you're like me you may find this quite a challenge, but striving towards it is at least is a positive and enriching thing. There are great websites and communities online to help you along this path - check out sites like White Hot Truth (I'm currently working my way through Danielle's wonderful e-book 'The White Hot Truth') and Susannah Conway (I can heartily recommend Susannah's 'Unravelling' e-course).

Where can we connect with you?
Come and check out my blog, I'd love to have you over for coffee and gossip! x

Gifted handmade ornament

Saturday again! We were supposed to be having family come visit for the weekend, but because of all the snow they can't make it :( We're off to a Christmas market today, girls are going to pay Santa a visit in his Grotto and I'm sure they'll be mulled wine and roast chestnuts consumed!

We put our decorations up on Thursday and have been busy making paper chains to put up as well. I'd love to see pictures of your decorations too.

I've been filling in the '100 things to do in 2011' in my Goddess Workbook - but so far I've only got about 25!!! Am in need of some ideas? HELP!

Here's some of what I've been loving this week:

  • The beautiful Elsiecake has written new e-course - 'Blog Love' It looks fantastic for new bloggers (and already established ones!) in need of some pointers.

Bloglove

  • I discovered a new blog this week -  Milk No Sugar - I'm loving this blog (plus the fact that she lives in the UK!)

I'm re-discovering my love for dressing up and vintage clothes, something I've kinda lost somewhere in the last year or two. I got it into my head that getting dressed up, faffing with my hair and make up, wasn't what I should be doing?! But it makes my heart happy and that's reason enough for me! Two sites that are inspiring me to dress up are:

  • I'm sponsering Pamplemousse this month - watch out for a guest post soon!

  • I came across a recipe for Oh Baby Bars - a kinda homemade peanut butter cup! yum yum - I can't wait to make these!

What's been inspiring you this week?

HAPPY SATURDAY EVERYONE!

I hope you've all had a great week and have fun plans for the weekend. We're spending today baking and crafting and re-dying my hair red! Throw in a visit from a friend and her baby and it's a perfect Saturday. Tomorrow we're going to a mind, body and spirit fair (as long as the snows not too bad).

I am loving my hair now the dreads have come out! I feel like a new woman. I don't regret the dreads for a minute, but I feel like the outside reflects the inside more now, if that makes any sense?!!? It was worth the time, and all of the pain to get them out. I hadn't expected my hair to be this long - so that was a nice surprise! I think I may have to do some shopping for new hair accessories now!

I've done a bit of blog surfing this week, anything with a picture of a deer or other woodland creature will always get me to click on it! So here's some cuteness from my week:

  • The Dainty Squid - Kaylah's blog and business of the same name. I love the things she makes to sell, and all the cuteness on her blog! A girl after my own heart.

  •  Deer Little Fawn - Beth's blog for her crafty projects, pretty things and whatever else takes her fancy! Love it.

I've updated my etsy shop this week, headbands and hairpins are in stock. I'll be putting some bags and tops that I've made up over the weekend too!

Have you treated yourself to Goddess Leonie's 2011 Goddess Workbook? I've been filling mine out, celebrating and relasing everything from this year, and setting out the 2011 I want to have! You can buy one here if you haven't already.

Living Life Your Way....Interview with Pixie Campbell

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Pixie Campbell

*Hi Pixie, tell us a  little about yourself.

I'm a mama, as well as an artist and writer. I love unlearning about art and life, keeping my creative pot stirring, and surrounding myself with kindred souls to enhance my experience of this beautiful, sacred planet.

*Asides from your blog, what else keeps you busy?

I paint, teach my children, write, collaborate with other artists, garden and travel as much as possible

*Is the life you lead now, the life you have always dreamt of?

I didn't really ever have a prescription for a dream life. But I'm very pleased with what I have and what I'm able to do. Once I tearfully and truthfully declared that I wanted to make art all of the time, and began doing it, the rest was easy.

*When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

My children inspire me to gather my energy when I feel low on resources. I never feel I have to be perfect for them, but I do try to have energy for them. The same goes for my creative babies. I work with the animals and their teachings in my art, and so I typically run into the ones who want to help me in my personal life-in dreamtime, in nature, in my backyard. I like to study the medicine they bring by observing their habits and how they adapt. I also run about about 12 miles a week, which is just enough to keep negative energy at bay, and if I'm facing a very difficult challenge, I seek bodyworkers, and healers, as well as ask for help from connected souls. Too many years facing difficulty alone has taught me to reach out. There's always some-thing or some-force ready to aid- this I trust. I find that creating anything at all helps to shift stagnant states of being, as well.

*Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?

I consider myself rather fearless about most things, somehow I have a covenant with trust when fear rears its ugly head. However, when I was pregnant with my first child about six years ago, I was terrified that he would imprint things from my family that would cause him to suffer (as I had). It was my own fear of making mistakes. So out of this terror, I ran in all directions to seek the teachings that would eventually bring me back to trust that I am not my mother, my father, or any of their mistakes. I also accepted, rather religiously, the idea that humans get to make mistakes. Even with our children. And that not allowing mistakes and enduring shame when they do happen (which of course they will) is a recipe for depression and a very conflicted inner life. So a No Mistakes Allowed Ethic is not allowed in our home! :) It's made life so much easier on all of us.

*What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

Find many ways to open up to your own intuitive guidance. In the ways of Native Americans, we use a practice called journeywork to meet our inner council and totems which in turn help lead me to the information I need to make choices. When ego learns how to step aside, out of the inner conversation, and we learn to distill the truth from all of the messages swirling within us, we can really do no wrong. I don't believe anything happens without imparting an important teaching just for the individual, so I'd encourage your faithful readers to enjoy life as one long continuum of lessons. And, of course, risk doing what you love instead of doing what you or others think you should do!! To me, its the difference between living life awake instead of asleep due to burying the soul's desires.

*What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

I would say that's really up to the individual to discover. For me, I feel happiest and most radiant when I'm very comfortable in my own skin. Whatever it takes to be at home within, I try to do that first. I have to live with myself every day, so I may as well learn to like all of my quirky foibles and flaws, as well as my lovely bits. We are all so divine. I do wish every mama and woman could feel it in her bones. Oh, you know, one more thing: Make friends with with women much older than you! They know so much more than we and can be so nurturing when needed.

*Where can we connect with you?

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Goddess Leonie

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Goddess Leonie

Hi Leonie, tell us a little about yourself and your family.

    Why of coursicles!

    Here's me in dot points:
    1. I'm totally in love with life.
    2. I see a goddess in every woman.
    3. I'm an artist, writer & goddess guide. And I help women to see what I see... the goddess inside them. Life is better when you know you are a goddess!
    4. I have an exquisite baby daughter, Ostara Faith Avalon.
    5. I am in love with a wise man who is also very hot.
    6. We live in my grandmother's old cottage in tropical paradise.

Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?

I'm very blessed to have a job that is my dream come true, and also manages to support my wee family so that my love and I can stay at home with our daughter.

I have been full time as a goddess for seven months, and was working part time as an editor before then as I grew my business. I took a few years of working part time to get my business to a point that it could really support my family happily.

Is your business as it is now something you've always dreamt of?

    Heck yeah!

I love saying that my job is being a goddess!

All of us have our fears, some rule stronger than others. What part has fear played in your life?

    Hmmmm. Good question.

For me, I use fear as medicine. As a teaching.

Fear is always leading me back home, to wisdom, knowing and love.

I was afraid of going full-time with my business. But it wasn't a fear that was based in practicality or logic. I knew that my business could earn enough. I was just afraid of the what-ifs: The what if I ran out of ideas? Or luck? What if, like Henny Penny, the sky fell in one day?

But I grew some cahones, and I leapt.

My love and I left the city and our public service jobs. We bought a small cottage {my grandmother's!} in tropical paradise. We did something that took our breath away. And it was perfect.

And you know what? Even if something does happen. Even if one of my fears does come true. I'll always be glad that we leapt. We will always just find the next step of what we need to do, and do it.

    It's simple.

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?

    1. An attitude like my grandmother's. Her motto is this: "I woke up this morning, and I was still breathing, so I thought: Today is going to be a GREAT DAY!"

    2. An attitude like my mother's. Her motto is this: "Everything is always going to turn out okay."

    3. An attitude like mine: My motto is this: "Joy is an option."

    and the bonus:

    4. An attitude like my daughter's. Her motto is this: "I rock!"

When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?

    The 5 Rule.

How will this still affect me in 5 minutes? 5 days? 5 months? 5 years?

Everything always gets better, easier, gentler, kinder.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?

    YOU CAN DOOOO EEEEEEEEET.

That, and grow some cahones and share your gifts with the world, pretty pretty pretty please.

You are going to bless the world with your incredible talents. It is so flipping true.

Example: A beautiful woman took my Creative Goddess e-course two years ago. She hadn't painted for years and was feeling so lost and stuck in it. And during the course, holy dinger she opened up so much. It was like floodgates opened. And she sent me the most beautiful letter thanking me for helping her to heal that part of her.

This week, she opened up her store of her artworks. Selling art that heals the mother soul. And it really did heal my soul. My daughter is still so young, and like most new mamas, it has been an intense time adjusting to this new life of mine. When I saw Mel's artwork, I couldn't stop staring at it. It opened up a floodgate of healing and joy inside me.

And it felt like this incredible healing had come full circle.

I had courage, and shared my gifts with the world, and it helped to heal a woman.

A woman had courage, and shared her gifts with the world, and it healed me.

Imagine how amazing it would be to have your gifts healing other women.

    We need you, sister!

Where can we connect with you?

Oh! I would so love to connect!

Oooh! And I just released a free printable mini Goddess Gratitude Diary!
You can also sign up to my VIP Goddess mailing list to get free healing meditations and posters and all kinds of scrumptious goodies!

The word pretty is unworthy of everything you will be,
and no child of mine will be contained in five letters.
    You will be
    pretty intelligent,
    pretty creative,
    pretty amazing,
but you will never be merely "pretty."

I've had major internet issues this week... no idea what was wrong, but I'm struggled to be able to get connected at all. But here are a couple of links I'd found earlier in the week. Hope you've all had a good week... I'm looking forward to being back online properly and catching up!

    • I'm featured over at The Middle Finger Project, as part of their Fear, Exposed series... please go read it and tell me what you think.

    • I came across Kelly and her lovely blog and  her shop - she sells beautiful crystal shells... well worth checking out. I can't wait to place an order... I just have to choose which I want first!

    • And lastly, if you haven't watched this video from Katie Makkai, then watch it now!

p.s I've started filling my etsy shop.... please hop over and take a look. Originals are going in today, and I plan on getting prints up in the next couple of days.

It's that time of the week again!!!

I've spent the best part of this week laid up with the flu. I had to remind myself to listen to my body and STOP. With a life full to the brim, a million things on the go at once and a to-do list longer than my arm, giving in and stopping for a few days isn't an easy task. So instead of pushing myself to keep going, I gave in. Allowed myself a few days of not doing very much. We chilled at home, baked some cakes, read lots of books, played some games and watched a couple of movies. I sent the girls off to the library with their dad for a couple of hours, and spent the time painting. I'm feeling much better now, ready to get back out there and live :D

Here's a little link ♥ love for this week:

    • First up is the absolutely fabulous Cakie Belle. Run by the beautiful Katie Krosby, a writer, dreamer, cake fanatic and advocate for positive body image and crusader for self love.

There's another 'Living Life Your Way' Interview on Monday with Jenn Gibson from Kind Over Matter

    Catching up

    source

I'm full of cold right now and I was awake half the night because my chest was so tight, I was having to take really shallow breaths and it was making me feel panicky. Feeling a little better this morning, just sleepy! So the girls have gone to the library with their Dad, leaving me home alone for the first time in ages!!! I've finished another painting whilst they've been out and now it's time for some online work!

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about which direction I want to move in with my art. I would love to be able to do some craft fairs next year - right now I don't have the confidence. I've decided that I'm going to set up an etsy shop, I'm busy working on it now, and hopefully it will be up and running soon. I'm also going to be making a few small changes around here... I've bought my own domain name, so I now own PixieMama.co.uk!!!

All that as well as having 3 girls, 3 cats and a house to look after! If I only had a few extra hours in my day or a pause button for everything!!! Hope you are all having a lovely autumn day

    Surrender

I came across Megan Monique and her blog a few weeks back, and I was bowled over by her positivity. It's something I've been working hard at lately, and she came into my life at just the right time to show me the way. She's kindly agreed to share some wise words with us here....

A year ago from this month I faced one of the most important days of my life.

It was my birthday week and I was in Port Aransas, Texas with some of my friends. At the time I was financially broke. I wasn’t sure how I was going to pay the bills or my rent when I got back, but I knew that I really needed to go on that vacation- for whatever reason.

That week was magical. At the time I was reading Marianne Williamson’s book, A Return to Love. The wisdom shared in those pages was enough to change my life forever.

The night before my birthday my friends and I made a campfire on the beach. I heard the ocean calling my name. While my friends were making s’mores and chatting it up I walked out into the ocean, opened up my arms, looked into the sky and surrendered everything.

I was tired of carrying around financial worries, personal worries and burdens. After reading that book I knew that by releasing my ‘control’ over my life to The Universe I would move from the stuck and into the flow.

The flow is a good place to be.

When you give up the control you think you have, you move into a space of Universal flow. This allows you to move with the current of life instead of against it.

I mean think about it, you are this tiny spec in the Universe, do you really think you know better for yourself than the eternal energy that lives within each and every one of us?

Loosen your grip. Trust the flow. Open your mind and await the happiness that is on its way.

I can't believe Saturday's here again, and I've been back of holidays for a whole week! How fast the time flies. It's been a  busy week, catching up after hols, home ed workshops, mountains of washing, berry picking, creating 4 paintings - my favourite kind of weeks. I am blessed.

I'm constantly in awe of how I stumble across the things I need to hear, the universe is truly listening to me right now. So here's a few gems that I've found this week.

    • Tiny Buddha - simple wisdom for complex lives. Beautiful site, full of wonderful wisdom... really made me stop and think.
