a confession...

I have a confession to make. And while I've hinted at it on and off a few times over the past few month, I feel that I need to be totally honest. The past few months have been incredibly difficult for me. I got hit wit ha serious bout of the blues. I have a long, long history of depression, it comes and it goes, and it's just one of those things.

One of the reasons I started this blog, way back in January 2010 was that I was once again in a very dark place, and thought that blogging might help me find a way out of it. And I was amazed at how therapeutic I found it. I fought hard, and clawed my way back to a brighter place.

Then this June/July, I started to notice that my mood was dipping low again. I tried to take extra special care of myself, eased off on some of the pressures that I had placed on myself - being a full time mum, homeschooling, blogging, crafting, running a house, an etsy shop.... my life was pretty crazy. I found myself hiding away, not talking to friends - IRL and online. I convinced myself that no-one would miss me if I wasn't online, if I didn't blog, etc. I fell deeper and deeper into that dark pit.

I mentioned here and there that I was feeling a little blue - but TBH I was pretty close to rock bottom. Some days it was all I could do to get out of bed in the morning. Asides from caring for my kiddos, I lost interest in everything else. Somehow I managed to make myself keep on blogging. I  knew how hard I've worked on this little space o'mine, and I didn't want to see it disappear.

I really thought at the worst that I could take no-more. And I was ashamed. Ashamed because people were so kind last year, when I was totally lost and in need of a helping hand, people stepped out to help. And I felt bad, that less than a year on, I was back where I started. So, I kept to myself, and tried not to talk about it. Tried to pretend that everything was ok. But that never helps.
I admitted defeat and went back on my meds. I think it is stronger to accept that you need help, than to pretend that you don't. And thankfully now, the darkness has lifted. I can see clearly once again, and I feel like I am 'me' again. To all of you who have stuck around (all summer - not just through this ramble ;p ) THANKYOU.

The down time has given me time to think, and I realised that I was putting to much pressure on myself. I was trying to compete, trying to be someone other than me. Trying to do everything, trying to do what  It though I should do, NOT what  I want to do. I'm in the process of changing my priorities. Only doing the things that I love. Following my own path.

I'm not sure if that made much sense, it was free-written, honest and from the heart. And un-edited. I guess I wanted to come clean, explain why I've been awol the last couple of months and say that full service will now be resumed ;p

Living Life Your Way.... Interview with Angie Muldowney

I've been working hard the last few months at overcoming my fears and following my dreams. So I'm running a series of interview with inspiring people to see what part fear has played in their life and how they've overcome it to live life their way...

This weeks interview is with Angie Muldowney

*Hi Angie , tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, Polly! Well, I'm 41 (*breathe* it's just a number, just a number), I married Mark, a wonderfully geeky, musical man on 9.9.99.

We live (just the two of us) in Southampton; a curious little city on south coast of England and my #1 passion is photography!

I have the city, the sea and a forest on my doorstep and I utilise them all in my photography whenever I can. I am SO lucky as I have an amazing digital SLR and fantastic lenses at my disposal. Not only that but a big family of film cameras, ranging from a huge soviet 'Hasselblad-ski', lomo cameras, antique Brownies, my precious, precious Polaroids and even one I found in a skip (dumpster)!

All my camera gear has been paid for through me selling my photographs. This is good as it allays much of the guilt I would otherwise feel about adopting all these odd an archaic (honestly, I have LOTS). My work is for sale online and in galleries and it's amazing to think that in homes across the globe people have chosen one of MY photos to adorn their walls. Staggering. I love sharing all my photographic adventures on my blog and on flickr. Oh, I love the internet!

going in
Have you always been self employed? And if not how did you make the change?
I have a day job as well as my lovely photography projects to keep me busy, so my days are jam-packed!
For a while I was rather resentful that I had to do a job that wasn't what I loved doing and that I had to give up all my precious time. Now though I've come to see the benefits of separating out what I love doing from what I need to do to pay the bills. I wonder if I might grow a little resentful of my ideas, projects and photos if they were the means to my income - and that maybe I wouldn't experiment as much and stick to safe and known ideas.

That's not to say I wouldn't relish the opportunity and adventure of self-employment but in these difficult financial times I am grateful for the stability I am lucky enough to have. One day!

Is the life you lead now the life you've always dreamt of?
Ever since I was a child right through to today I have woken each morning with a new idea; a new dream. (I think a person can have too many ideas!) So, in that respect it's probably not the life I dreamt of. Saying that I always knew I wanted to do something artistic so I am pleased that that's a reality. I also dreamt I'd be married to Simon Le Bon and living on a tropical island... these things did not happen.
When you have faced difficulties, what has been your inspiration to keep going?
The consequence of having lots and lots of ideas is that it doesn't leave too much time for sticking to just one of them and seeing it through to the end! This is what I find most difficult and something I really haven't found an answer for yet. I'm like a light-bulb that's switched on, burning bright with ideas and buzzing with exciting plans.

And then off.

I have no dimmer switch, there's nothing in between.

This is an analogy appropriate for lots of things in my life - all or nothing. When the switch is 'off', when it feels too impossible to write, create or even contemplate picking up a camera I allow myself a day or two off from these things and indulge in different creative worlds. Maybe I'll watch a film, go to an art gallery, listen to new music. Baking, knitting, gardening - things I'm not very good at but that use different bits of my brain. Soon enough though the switch is back on again. Thankfully!

Fear affects us all at some point. What part has fear played in your life and how have you overcome it?
Sometimes I think I am literally going crazy because of the whirlwind of thoughts and ideas swirling around my brain and I have to be careful that I don't dwell too closely on the reality of what little time I have to try and fulfil all of them. I have to force myself to focus on one thing at a time and visualise the satisfaction I'll get from completing something - and when I DO complete something this is the best thing of all for conquering fears.

What advice would you offer on following your heart and living your dreams?
Be gentle with yourself, you'll be your own worst critic so start sharing your creative side with friends and/or online because I promise you the nurturing and loving endorsements you'll receive will become a great sounding board and reality check for you and help you on the road to realising how great you really are!
Oh, and don't hang around, give it a go NOW i.e. if you want to be a photographer be one now, use the camera on your phone, it's about you, not the equipment - same applies to anything creative, a journey starts with one small step,

What do you think are the three most important things you need to lead a happy and radiant life?
I think you need... love. Whether of a person, a place, a hobby, these are all good and important but mainly you need love of yourself.

If you're like me you may find this quite a challenge, but striving towards it is at least is a positive and enriching thing. There are great websites and communities online to help you along this path - check out sites like White Hot Truth (I'm currently working my way through Danielle's wonderful e-book 'The White Hot Truth') and Susannah Conway (I can heartily recommend Susannah's 'Unravelling' e-course).

Where can we connect with you?
Come and check out my blog, I'd love to have you over for coffee and gossip! x

    Be here now

One thing I'm working on right now is to try and live here and now in THIS moment. Life can get so hectic, we rush through our days never truly experiencing what is around us. Living in the moment is one key step I can make along this path to happiness and contentment. When my depression is at it's worst I'm constantly looking to the future, thinking about what could make me happy, or where I need to be to be content in my life. By focusing on what I don't have (or perceive not to have) I'm denying all the good that is in my life RIGHT NOW. I get so wound up in my thoughts that I lose track of what is real.

There is beauty in every moment, and even through the harder moments we can experience something beautiful if we allow ourselves too.

My thinking up until now has always been very black and white. All or nothing. Everything is fantastic or totally bloody awful. A bad moment was dark clouds and sadness. I never saw the middle ground. One moment of sadness and I would allow it to pull me all the way down. I'd focus on that, long after that moment had passed, and ignore what was going on now.

A quote I read somewhere (and I can't for the life of me find it again now!) stated that:
Mindful people are happier, more exuberant, more empathetic, and more secure. They have higher self-esteem and are more accepting of their own weaknesses. Anchoring awareness in the here and now reduces the kinds of impulsivity and reactivity that underlie depression, binge eating, and attention problems. Mindful people can hear negative feedback without feeling threatened. They fight less with their romantic partners and are more accommodating and less defensive. As a result, mindful couples have more satisfying relationships.
I'm learning to focus on NOW. To avoid worrying about what has been, or might be.  To stop wishing for things that I don't have and instead enjoy the things that I do. It's all to easy to think

"oh, when I have x,y and z THEN I'll be happy"

Focusing on what is happening in the present is keeping me grounded, savouring the many moments of joy that make up each and every day is helping me to fight the negative thoughts that run through my mind. I'm choosing to focus on the good, each time a negative thought pops up, I acknowledge it but then find something positive to replace it with.

    I AM NOT MY THOUGHTS

I realised that I love the simple things in life. I don't need lots of money, a big house, mountains of possessions to be happy. I have all I need in life to be happy already - I just have to focus on them. I'm re-learning every day to be thankful for what we have and to not let life pass me by any longer.

    Letting go

    source

For as long as I can remember, I have lived with depression. I have spent years hating myself and wishing I was dead. I have lived in a constant state of depression and hopelessness. I have been full of self doubt, and negative talk. I am my own worst enemy, constantly putting myself down, not taking care of myself, choosing to believe those negative thoughts swirling round in my mind.

I've been waiting for some miracle cure, a magic spell to rid me of these feelings. I have hoped that someone, anyone would come along and make everything OK. I haven't allowed myself to work through the reasons behind these feelings. I haven't allowed them to be important. Instead, I've created the truth in my head that these things have happened because I'm depressed, because I'm a bad person, because I deserved them. I'm slowly starting to accept that that isn't the truth. That I am depressed because of the things that have happened in my life. And that to rid myself of the depression then I have to acknowledge their importance.. and confront them face on so that I can put them to rest.

When we are born, happiness is an innate quality that we possess. Unfortunately, as we grow and are exposed to negativity, violence, suffering and sadness, the happiness that once we took for granted leaves us. Happiness is a skill that we have to practice, to work on. It won't just reappear, we have to actively seek it out and invite it back into our lives.

    • Letting  go of depression
It's easy to get stuck in a pattern of behaviours, feelings and emotions. To some extent, we make the decision to be depressed. Safe in what we have always known, we hold on to our depression, afraid to make the changes necessary to move on.
Have you wondered why people who complain, all of the time, about how bad everything in their life is, yet make no effort to change things? They are thriving on their self-pity, and inviting others to reaffirm it to them.

I've been doing lots of thinking lately, and have started being truthful with myself. One of my biggest obstacles to being happy is myself. I have grown comfortable with my depression, it's almost like a safety net, a get out clause for me.... oh I can't do that I'm too depressed... It is the only way I have ever known how to be. I'm afraid of happiness, because it's unfamiliar to me.

    • Removing Negativity and Introducing Positivity
If you're trying to move away from depression, the last thing you need is to be surrounded by negative people. They drain your energy, waste your time and reaffirm your old habits and thoughts. Cut your ties with people who don't make you feel good, see less of them, or change the subject every time they start complaining! There are a few people in my life who fit this perfectly. They spend their time complaining about how hard everything is, etc etc... they hint at changing but when it comes to it they don't. They are not healthy relationships for me right now, so whilst it's difficult to cut ties entirely, I am cutting down on how much time I spend with them.

Whilst cutting out negativity from your life, it's also important to surround yourself with positivity, be it images, people or what you are reading. Positivity creates more positivity.

There are times when I can feel myself slipping back into negativity and depression. In the past I would allow those feelings to overwhelm me, to give in entirely to them. But now I am learning how to stamp them out, by listening to uplifting music, or reading books/articles online that encourage positive thinking, by painting/crafting, by reaching out to a friend.... things that make me feel good.

    • Confront your demons
To overcome depression, it is vital that you confront the negative things in your life in order to be able to accept them and let them go. For years and years I have done everything possible to avoid having to deal with anything. I've turned to drink and drugs to block things out, restricted my eating or overate, self-harmed... all ways of trying to ignore my feelings. I am slowly starting to confront my past. I'm waiting to see a counselor... but in the meantime I've been writing it down in my journal, and writing it all down... every last little thing. Sometimes I feel as if my heart is going to burst out of my chest, my head starts spinning and terror threatens to take over. When this happens, I slow my breathign down, close my eyes and go inside myself. I repeat to myself that everything is going to be fine, that it's ok to let go of my old ways.

The old self will fight and scream and kick to be allowed to keep on living... you have to fight back and not give in to it. Let it go.

    source

    • Allow yourself to be alone
Sometimes I'm scared to be alone, scared that the depression will overwhelm me again. It's all too easy to cling to other poeple, to hope that they will create your happiness. While having friends is very important, and others can help you on your path, ulitmeatly it is only YOU who can create your own happiness.

Allow myself time alone, time to write or paint or think or just be. Become aware of yourself, of who you really are, what you think, what you feel. Turn your self-pity into compassion, and then into love. Love for yourself, and love for living. Seperating the lies from the truth, and becoming aware of just how powerful you can be.

    • Know you are loved
Yes there are many cruel humans about, but there are also tons of good people too. Open your eyes and you will see them. Let go of the poeple who have hurt you in the past, they are not important. The people who matter are the ones who see the bueaty in everything.... they are the importnat ones.
You are loved. Life is short. Don't waste time worrying over what may be, or what has been. You can't change the past, but by accepting it and letting yourself move on, you can change your future.

    Fighting Fear

    source

When I'm crippled with depression, I sit and look at all some people seem to achieve. They create, and connect, and live and truly seem to embrace life and all that it has to offer. Whereas I am sat, alone in my cave, unable to reach out, unable to be apart of the world.

And I am jealous. I want to be like everyone else. I want to do something. I do not want life to pass me by. I do not want to be an observer.

I want to take part. I want to be involved. I want to make an impact.

I've overcome the worst of my depression this time. And for the first time, I know that I have to make huge changes in my life if I don't want to keep having repeat bouts of depression.

I've trying to overcome my fear of not being good enough, of not having anything to give, of not being important enough, of not being pretty enough...... I think you get the picture.

So, I'm taking part. I'm no longer sitting at home watching the world pass by my window. I'm writing here for a start, I'm painting and creating... and being brave enough to put the photos of it online... I'm connecting with people, in real life as well as here, on facebook, on twitter and on email.

I'm being pro active... I'm putting myself out there, and trying to create the life I dream of. I'm working hard to make it a reality.

BUT... still those niggling fears and doubts plague my mind from time to time. I'm trying to accept that they'll always be there, trying to find a way to ignore them.

"why are you bothering to blog... they're is so many better bloggers than you already"
"you're paintings aren't as good as theirs"
"you're not as interesting as them"
    "it'll never work anyway"
    "they don't really like you"
    "you're just not good enough"
Sometimes, when thoughts are racing through my brain, it all seems to much. I start thinking maybe those thoughts are right. Who am I trying to fool? I'm never going to change anything, and I'll never amount to anything. I should just give up and go back to hiding in my hole.

    source

But I'm still here... and I'm fighting. I refuse to give in to my fears. I'm trying not to think about things to much, trying to look at the bigger picture. Remembering that I'm doing all of this for ME... nobody else.

Screw you fear... you will not win this battle.

So, Monday I was feeling a little raw. Maybe much of it was imagined, or over-exaggerated in my head. Feeling excluded. Wondering what had been the point of the last few months. It seems that every time I manage to get back on the right path, start taking baby steps away from feeling so low.. .something comes along that makes me doubt it all.

I've spent most of my life shutting everyone out, not letting anyone get too close so that they can't hurt me. I've pushed people away and lost friends rather than risk being hurt. Of course, by pushing them away and losing friends, I've hurt myself anyway.

Anyway, 6 months or so ago, when I was right down there at rock bottom, I 'confessed' all to a couple of people, a few others knew a little of what was going on but not all. They all knew I was crying out for help and in need of some good friends. They all assured me that they were there for me.

Yet actions speak louder than words, and there for me they have not been. On more than one occasion, I have been excluded from gatherings. Later it's been claimed that a text was sent... not one that got to me. It was made out to be me, who had opted not to go, then changed my mind... so not true.

I spent all day Monday fighting against my feelings... feelings of not being good enough, of not being liked, etc. Not new feelings, but ones I've been working hard to suppress and ignore. Trying to ignore the voice in my head telling me there is something wrong with me... same things keep happening over and over and over... it must be my fault, right?

With a couple of days perspective, the lack of invite doesn't hurt so much. It's time to move on, accept that what will be will be, that they are not my tribe.

The truth is I'm a little lonely. Sure, I know a lot of people, but I don't have many close friends. No one who calls me up to see how I am, who drops by for a cuppa, who's just there. I know it's my fault. I've pushed everyone away, kept them at arms length.

What I don't know is how to change that? How to let people in? How to let the people around me know that I'm different now? How to find my tribe??

    Moving Forward

    source

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. "

    --Goethe

I've been doing a lot of soul searching lately. Trying to work out what it is that I've been doing wrong, why my depression keeps coming back, sucking me in to it's black hole, taking away my joy, my energy, my self. For some reason, I got to thinking about the Wizard of Oz. It's one of my favourite movies, I have watched it countless times. I was thinking about how Dorothy spends the whole movie searching for the wizard, only to find that the power of the wizard was inside her the whole time.

The power to change and grow is inside all of us too, we just have to remember that. I've spent most of my life searching for someone, anyone who will make everything alright. Someone to stop the hurting, and make all the bad memories go away. Someone who could make me into the person I want to be, who could give me the life I dreamed of. It is only now that I'm beginning to realise that the only person who can do any of that is ME. A lifetime's search to find who I needed was right here all along!

In a way I feel some relief... that I don't have to search any long, trying to find the person who can magically make everything better. But the knowledge that it all lies with me is quite scary. The very fact that it's taken me nearly 30 years to work this out, years that have been difficult. Years in which I've struggled to stay alive, to find a reason to keep going.

“People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar” --Thich Nhat Hanh.

I think that I have used my suffering as an excuse to not have to change, to not have to move forward. I could always pass everything off on the things that I have gone through, thereby deflecting any responsibility away from myself. I've avoided living the life I've wanted, avoided being the person I could be, all because I was too scared to move forward and leave the suffering behind.

The person I am today is the result of all that I have been through. Yet I am not that little girl or that vulnerable teenager. No longer am I someone who will let others treat me however they please. No more is that me.

I know that moving forward and leaving my past behind will not be an easy road to navigate, but I know that I have the power inside of me. I'm trying to take one small step at a time, to not expect everything to change all at once, and to be patient.

I want to be the person I know I am deep inside, I want to live the life that I dream. Life is too short to sit and watch anymore of it pass me by. It is time to stand up and take action, to show my daughter's that I am a strong woman, that we can be and do anything our heart desires.

finding my way back to me

do you know who you are??? truly are, deep within your soul? none of us are just one thing, we all have different roles that form our identity. sometimes these blend into one another, sometimes they are kept separate.

i seem to have spent most of my life searching for who i am. and i'm still no closer to knowing. from a very early age, i've felt like an outsider, i felt that i wasn't real and i didn't matter. things happened when i was little, things that made me shut a part of me off, self preservation i guess. i believed the things i was told. that it was my fault... that i wasn't good enough... that what i thought and felt weren't important.. and because i believed it i searched out more of the same... people who would validate the way i'd come to think of myself. my teens were a difficult time... an abusive relationship... a difficult relationship with my folks.... putting myself in situations because i didn't think i deserved any better... self harm... drink... drugs... eating disorders... all because i'd been taught to hate myself and i did with a vengeance.

the law of attraction says that like follows like... and because my thoughts were of self hate... and i expected people to abuse me... that's exactly what i got. the more that it happened, the more my feelings and beliefs were validated.

i've spent my life trying to be who other people want me to be...what other people expect me to be... trying to be someone different for each and every person in my life.. i've pushed people away if they get too close, afraid that they won't like what they find in me. and now... i don't know who i am... what really makes me ME.. i'm afraid to show the world my true colours, afraid to just be me, to not censor myself and allow myself to be the person i want to be.

i'm trying to find a way to reconnect with myself.. i want to live my life in full colour, free of the need for approval from others, free of judgement, free to be who i am. but first i have to find myself. i want to love myself and accept that i am me, no one else and for that to be ok.

i've been reading lots of other posts on blogs that have deeply resonated with me, this at ShaktiMama, here at Jen Lemen and this from Leonie . Many many more have touched me, but these are the first that sprung to mind.

    Quiet times.....

I seem to have been very quiet of late again.... I've been busy trying to level myself... to even out the highs and lows and to find myself. I've been lost for so long, unsure of who I am, unsure of what I want and what I need. I've been burying myself in day-to-day life, of enjoying my girls, trying to find my footing in the real world again. I've been painting some, crafting some and journalling some. I've discovered a great book which I will blog about very very soon.

Sometimes I loose my voice... I feel that I have nothing worth writing here, that anything that I do write is not good enough... that anything I create is not good enough. I have to stop comparing myself to others and just be content with what I have to say and what I can create.

Sometimes I'm scared of putting myself out there, of saying this is who I am, like it or not.

I need to overcome my fears and just let this be a space to write whatever I feel like writing and not worry if others like it/agree with it/understand it!

    Rethinking Everything Magazine

I've just recieved a free trial issue of 'Rethinking Everything Magazine', which is a small, independent magazine dedicated to sharing stories of incredible, life-altering change.  It was co-founded by two inspiring women, both mothers and advocates of living and learning outside the box.

I've only had chance to read the first two articles so far, and scan through the rest of the magazine, but I am amazed by the effect this little has had on me already.
Throughout the message that comes across is: owning our own lives, stepping outside our comfort zones, tuning into and honoring ourselves and loved ones, finding our own way  for change ready to emerge a happier, more whole and wildly passionate person.

Go see what it's all about for yourself!!
