homeschooling q&a

i've had a lot of questions about our homeschooling lately. what we do, what methods we use, how i plan our days, etc. i thought i'd try and answer a couple of them here.

homeschooling wasn't something that we chose to do on a whim. it is something that we researched heavily and spoke to other homeschooling families before we made the decision. the biggest worry that seems to come from onlookers is the social aspect. my kids are pretty sociable, and they have many friends from their outside groups that they have know for a long time, family friends and friends from our homeschooling groups. we get out and about a lot, we don't sit home all day long - we spend a lot of time with other people. homeschooling is definelty not the easy option... to be perfectly honest four people {as the mr goes to work} who spend all day every day with each other, we can drive each other nuts! but hand on heart i love it - i couldnt' imagine it any other way. the good far outweighs the bad, and i'm incredibly blessed to get to spend my days with my kiddos.

q - what curriculum do you use?

we don't use one particular curriculum. there are so many different ways and styles of learning, i pick and choose what works for my family best. we take a mix of ideas from montessori and unschooling most of all.

i had a few questions as to what books we are using, so here are some of what we have for the year

maths - for both - C.I.M.T mathematics programme

           - kiki - focusing on phonics and reading skills, and this language arts guided journey

geography//both - world geography

history//both - we created a list of topics that we wanted to study - we're starting off with Ancient Egypt- I've put together a unit study for us to work through together.

science//both - again, we've created our own unit studies - starting with our senses {i can tailor the work to suit different ages//levels so that everyone gets something out of these}

also - we'll be doing lots of practical experiments, using these books - 100 science experiments and science in seconds

these are just a few.... within each subject we do so much more than just book work. we do a lot of art and crafts {we're doing a unit study on the worlds greatest artists this year}, go on nature walks, visit museums and gallerys. the older kiddos take outside groups too - brownies, rainbows, netball, a book club and drama.

miss baya likes to be involved - she wants to do jsut what her big sisters do. i can see that a lot of it is going in. right now she is very interested in letters//spelling and practicing some letter formation!

q. how do you plan your days?

there isn't a right//wrong way to plan your days, just as there isn't a right//wrong way to how you homeschool. you need to do whatever works best for your family.

for us, we usually work from around 10am [we're not early risers!!] to around 1pm. We cover a few short lessons each day. somedays we'll do a little more, somedays a little less... we take it as it comes, and never miss out on a trip out or a visit from friends because of work ;)

to keep track of what the kiddos are studying i printed out some charts. at the start of the 'school' year, i make a rough plan of what we want to cover that year. I tend to map out a half term {6 weeks} at a time - picking unit studies, gathering books + supplies, etc.

the charts that i created have a space for each subject, and a column for each day of the week. i use a seperate one for each kiddo. it gives me space to write down what we'll be studying each week, as well as when - i need things written down clearly for me to see else i lose track and get nothing done!

right now, we usually do maths, english and geography three times a week, two science sessions, 1 nature study session. history and art happen twice a week, and music and language study once - this changes from time to time, and of course, we do more of each subject outside 'formal' times too!

i hope this has answered a few questions for you - feel free to ask anymore below!

saturday sun >>>

least i hope there's going to be some sunshine!! we're off camping for a couple days today.... fingers crossed we don't get flooded out ha! i'm so glad to be going away, i've been super busy the past few weeks i'm in desperate need of a couple days off. i've been finishing off getting our homeschool plans and projects in place {i have a post about that next week!}, plus doing some work for a new blog project i'm involved in! i'm in the middle of making some new stock for my shop as well as for a couple of outlets here.

on top of all that i've sorted and decluttered my house... it started when i was reorganising the home school stuff and art supplies... i felt the urge to keep going and boy does it feel good to rid the house of some clutter! so it was very timely that i was offered some of ecover's new zero range to test out. we're already ecover fans in this house, but the new range has been specially crafted to for people who want a fragrance free allergy-approved. perfect for sensitive skin, the zero core range is dermatologically tested and approved by allergy uk.

we got sent some laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, washing up liquid, a tea towel and dishcloth in a cloth tote. i was interested to try out the laundry liquid and fabric conditioner, as lola and i have very sensitive skin, and i usually stick to washing balls as opposed to any liquids/powders - as most irritate our skin. we tried it out over a few washes, and so far so good! i washed our bedding in it which was the biggest test as we're laid on the sheets for hours at a time. but it looks like it hasn't irritated us at all - great news!!

i'll definitely be buying more of this range in future - if you want to try it out, you can buy it online here.

and now to go finish the packing for our camping trip :)

hope you all have a fantastic weekend

it's been kinda busy....

as much as I love this time of year, it always seems that we end up running around like crazy with so many things to do and so much on in the space of a few weeks!! I think that I've finished my Christmas shopping, I've gotten most of my parcels posted out to folks that I needed to, just a couple left to go. Tonight I have to brave the cupboard that is currently full of Christmas gifts :O I'm planning on putting a movie on the laptop once the girls are in bed, and sorting it out, checking that I've got all the stocking fillers I need, and maybe making a start on the wrapping - although I think that will take more than one evening.

The girls great-grandparents visited on Monday, and my Mum's been here since Wednesday - we're taking her to the train station in an hour. The girls love having company {and so do I!} - it's nice to see folk before Christmas - they all live a way aways so we don't see them at Christmas. There's been lots of playing and reading and game playing all week - the girls love having some one different to entertain them.

Friday we had a Christmas party at one of our Home Ed groups. The kiddos dressed up, we made did some christmassy crafts, had a delicious shared meal and had a little 'disco' in the afternoon :D It was great fun, and left us all feeling super festive.

Tomorrow, we've a friend coming round to take some photos of the girls modeling her fairy clothes - I can't wait - it's gonna be a fun morning!!!! I'll be sure to share some photos {I might be joining in too!} Here's some pics from this week {if you're on Instagram you can follow me @thisenchantedpixie}

Baya with her Nain. Vintage Christmas Carol Book. Gigi up the tree :/
Homeschooling. Hot Chocolate & Cream
Colouring. Stories with Gramsie. Kitten on the computer!

Christmas Party Fun!!

p.s - it's the last day to enter the Handmade Haven soap giveaway & you can also enter to win a 2012 Creating Your Goddess Year Workbook too!

Home Schooling

I've been planing to write a post on this subject for a while. But somehow I've never quite gotten around to it. The last couple of weeks though, I've had quite a lot of questions regarding our family homeschooling - so I thought it was about time I actually wrote this!!

source

Homeschooling wasn't something that we had always planned on. In fact, Lola went to Nursery half-days between ages 3 & 4. During that time, we were having to think about which school she would go on to, and the more we thought about the whole system, the more we didn't want to go down that route. We weren't overly happy with the 'system' or some of the things that our children would be exposed to. We also wanted to offer them the chance to just be children. To spend all day playing, to learn through play, to relax and not have pressure put on them at such a young age. Having a {almost} four year old of my own made me realise just how little they still are at that point. We are big fans of children being home until they are at least 7 years old.

We did a lot of research before we made the decision. I spent hours on line trawling through home-schooling websites, personal blogs, anything that would give me a little insight! It wasn't a decision that we made lightly, but I do think it was the best decision for our family.

We've now officially been home-schooling for 4 years. We are lucky here in the UK that home-schooling allowed, and we don't have any restrictions on how we home-school. We don't have to follow any particular curriculum, or conform to any standards, or under go any assessments. For the first couple of years we were unschoolers - we didn't sit down and do lessons - it wasn't 'school at home'. The kiddos learn so much just through observing and participating in real life. They helped me bake - fantastic for learning maths skills, plus changes in matter {solids, liquids & gases} as well as being an essential life skill. We played games, read a million books, made puzzles, painted and danced and laughed our way through days.

My eldest daughter is now 8, and our manner of home-schooling has changed slowly over the years. Part of the brilliance of home-schooling is being able to adapt life to fit each individual as well as the family as a whole. While my middle daughter is an excellent self-starter, the eldest prefers to be given tasks to do. She is an avid reader, she loves to read history books and her knowledge already surpasses mine! Now we do sit down and do some 'formal' work most days, family life here seems to run a little smoother if we have a daily action plan and some official learning time. Still, I'd say that most of their learning is still organic and isn't taught.

I know a lot of people have asked about our daily routine, how I manage to fit everything in and what sort of things we do.
We still don't follow a specific curriculum, but I pick and choose what I need from several different sources. I spend an hour or so on a Sunday sorting out the girls work for the following week, organising what we'll be doing each day, making sure that any books we need are handy, any worksheets are printed out. I have a simple chart that I print out each week, a column for each day and a row for each child {just the bigger two right now!}. This is filled in with what each of them needs to do that day, and is pinned up on the bureau so they can easily see for themselves what they need to be doing. This method means that I know what we have to get done that week, I know that all the resources I need are on hand and we can just get on in a morning and tick that day's work off :)

In a typical week we'll have one or two sessions of Maths, one or two sessions of English, a morning spent doing science activities, several sessions on Studyladder {a on line Maths and Literacy Programme aimed at Primary and Junior High School ages} a morning focused on project work - the project we're working on right now is Oceans - last week the girls made this ocean diorama :)

We usually spend the mornings sitting doing this work - I can sit alongside to help out and catch up on a few emails or write blog posts etc at the same time. Miss Baya usually likes to do her work too - lots of colouring sheets and dot-to-dots ;) She is actually picking things up incredibly quickly because she sits in on her big sisters work :)

Afternoons are filled with free play, crafting, baking, reading, etc - I can do my work whilst the girls are busying themselves. I often set up art-y activities for them, putting different items out on the table, giving them ideas to inspire and see what they come up with. These times are so precious - my girls love to craft along side me, watching and learning as I'm painting, making clothes or jewellery. SO often they want to help out. More often than not I find one of them doing extra 'work' - they dont' see it as something that they have to do - but as something that is fun to do. And that is so important - we spend our lives in school being told what we need to know, often simply to pass a test, and this takes all the joy out of learning. But in truth, learning isn't something that should stop the minute we leave school - it is lifelong - we can never know everything.

We are pretty lucky where we live that there is a thriving home-schooling network. We attend several social meets, as well as art workshops, science workshops and many other great opportunities. The elder girls both attend Brownie/Rainbow groups and Lola goes to a book club at the local library as well. I know that one thing that seems to concern people is the whole socialisation issue. I had someone ask me earlier this year if the girls mind not having any friends!!!! She seemed to be under the impression that we spent all day, every day in the house and never saw another soul. The girls both have lots of friends, home schooled and not, and enjoy active social life's {far better than mine!}

We wanted our kiddos to learn the things that interested them, to find a love for learning new things and to thrive and be who they want to be. We are incredibly lucky to be able to go down this path. We have made sacrifices to be able to do this - my income is incredibly small, we don't have a car, we don't take lots of holidays, we buy secondhand. But it is totally worth it. Home-schooling is not for everyone - it is not always an option, and it doesn't suit every family or even every child within a family. We are not against any of ours trying school if they ever wish to. As long as they are happy then that is all that matters.

Useful sites, resources, etc.

If you're new to the concept of home-schooling or looking to find out more, some useful sites are:
* Education Otherwise {UK}
* Homeschooling{USA}
*Great ideas on working out your home school schedule

Some sites that we use for worksheets, lesson ideas, etc.
* Studyladder - an on line Maths and English programme (they also have some geography/music/language/art activities too) my kiddos LOVE this site - it's laid out in school years, with a tonne of educational games to do. They are always asking to go on here :)

*Lesson Pathways  - an American site, so for us, some of the content is not applicable (ie. history) but this site offers a free K-5 curriculum. It has some fantastic ideas and resources on their - we use it tonnes for science, history and geography work

*Home School Maths - great free printable maths worksheets

* Muddle Puddle - some great resources, printables and worksheets.

*Activity Village - a wealth of ideas, printables, worksheets, activities, etc

*A-Z Worksheets - more great worksheets

*Owl and Mouse - free games, software and educational activities

* The Lyons Den - educational resources mainly aimed at Kindergarten level

These are just a few of the hundreds out there - trail and error has shown that these are the ones we use mostly. The Lesson Pathways site is one of my very favourites - I use it weekly to plan our science and project work - it links to so many other great sites, full of everything you need to teach your kiddos :)

And if you have made it to the end of this then I am very impressed ;)

I'd love to hear your experiences of home-schooling, and sites that you can recommend or any questions that you have :)

new name.... same old blog ;)

Did you spot the name change???! It's something I've been thinking about for ages. I picked the name 'Pixie Mama' in a hurry when I first set up this blog almost 2 years ago {!} and tbh for the past 6 months or so I've started to really dislike it. It didnt' gell with how this blog turned out, and the more I thought about it the more I hated it. SO.... I decided to change the name to be the same as my shop- 'This Enchanted Pixie' - new name, same blog ;) What do you think???! Hope it's not too confusing :/

So far we've having a great Monday...the kiddos have done their 'school' work, and I've knitted whilst helping them. We've written letters to Santa, off to post them in a minute and do a couple of jobs in town, then home before Kiki has Rainbows later.

AND - we have a winner for the Dainty Hippo Giveaway -->

Congratulations Jenna Mefford!!!!

Please email me to claim your prize ;)

Saturday Round-up

♥

Saturday! I love the weekend!! Last night a friend came round after the kiddos had gone to bed, we had cider and cheesecake and a three-hour long chat :) It was a perfect end to a great week. I don't have friends round often enough in the evening - definitely something I need to change!

Today we've had a walk to get some sweeties (Sweetie Saturday!!) and pick up a parcel at the post office. I've got some drawing I want to do this afternoon, some crafty ideas for blog posts to make and photograph, and I have the urge to bake some banana bread too!

I need to spend a few hours tomorrow sorting out some home ed stuff... we've had a bit of 'burnout' recently, so I'm trying to sort out some new ideas, a little more 'structure' a little bit of rhythm to our days. I'm planning a post on home schooling soon - if you have ANY questions at all you'd like answered leave me a comment below {anonymous if you like!] or drop me an email :)

not back to school....

the schools here have all started back this week.. and while we're home-schooling, after spending years myself in the school system, I still get that 'back-to-school' feeling come September! I love that I get to spend all day with my kiddos, and get to enjoy this life that we have. while we didn't completely stop work over the summer, now that autumn seems to be here I've plans to get back on track with our home schooling.

we don't follow a particular curriculum, nor are we totally formal in the way we learn. but i do think that some structure is important in the girls learning, and we use various workbooks- mainly for maths/english and science. they also use an online programme called Studyladder which they both love.

we usually do an hour or so of book work in a morning, then activities in the afternoon. homeschooling is not an easy choice and not the right one for every family. I'm open to the girls going to school in the future if they ever want to try or if our situation changes. but for now I'm excited to carry on this road!
